your mpg loss is in your head

the only way to measure this, as you are saying it, mpg loss due to 'dirty oil'
    is

    a) the tacoma is set up on a dyno bench in controlled atmosphere chamber

    b) you refine your own gasoline and provide it as laboratory grade and exact measurements

    c) run computerized and controlled engine operating patterns on that dyno

    d) compare results

no way no how is 5000 miles of dirty oil affecting your MPG. unless it has sand in it.

I don't care what anyone says, I go by how the oil looks, synthetic or not. After about 4k miles, if the oil stills looks fairly clean on the dipstick I'll keep running it, but as soon as it turns very dark, it's getting changed. Of course this varies by the engine, some are just naturally harder on oil than others.

All full synthetics last 10k. If you see otherwise on manuals (like the Toyota Manual for the 2015 Tacoma) that recommends 5k changes it's just to make $$$. Hence why I don't blindly follow manuals. They tend to arbitrary and aren't based on science.

Just FYI, Filter bypass OPENS all the time, specifically on start-up, I work in Aerospace MFG QC and AIAG world, ASTM, SAE, JIS, MIL ISO, AS9100 etc.. The reason I run over sized filters is due to the bypass valve..

OEM is fine. There is no valid reason to use anything else.

I'm running the Fram 3600. It's taller than the 3614 and have read other posts where guys have been running them for some time.

I run the XG which is the top of the line for Fram. On the Fram filter specification page, they have the exact same specs and dimensions with the exception of the height or length of the filter.

Do this at your own risk and bring on the flames!

I run Mobil 1 filters in all our vehicles and Amsoil oils. I still change at 5K do to our short daily commutes. When I was young I used Fram until I had a filter fail and after switching to Mobil1 filters and seeing how the oil stayed cleaner longer id NEVER put a fram on a vehicle. Now that's my personal opinion and experience others will vary.

I've run Fram filters my entire life and have two Toyotas now with over 265,000 miles on them with no problems. My wife's Sienna has about 180,000 miles on it and is like a brand new van.

BUT, I may give the Mobil 1 filter a try on my Taco next time and see if this is true! I have 277,000 on my Corolla and the oil NEVER gets really black. Of course, that's probably because I have to add a quart every 1,500 miles.....

The mobil synthetic oil in my truck goes black every 6 months even though I only put about 2,000-3,000 miles on it, granted I make lots of short trips (5-6miles)

Bigger oil filter means more oil capacity for the engine, which rarely is a bad thing. Yes, the PH8A and equivalent will fit. The gasket is a little larger diameter than OEM, but it fits fine. The PH3600 and equivalent is longer than OEM with same diameter gasket.

Unless you are going by the severe duty schedule (racing, off-roading, etc...) stick to the PH3600's. And if you are using synthetic oil, get a synthetic oil filter. I've tested my oil at 10K with Mobil 1 Extended Performance syn oil, and results (TBN value) indicated I could have gone another 3K+.

95 Ford Taurus V6 filter will work. About an inch taller than the D3.

I do the same with my bloodwork. When the nurse draws it, I look it over before it goes off to the lab.

Regardless of what the stupid Dr. says, I tell him it was red, and I don't need any of his faux pills for cholesterol, diabetes, etc that you learn about from blood 'tests'.

Looking at it is good enough for me too!

I have been using the Wix 51515 filter for years now. I have the tow package with the oil cooler and it fits fine.
