Excellent! Amazing how light weight aluminum is!

 

I've been looking at this stuff for a while and it's about bonus time at my company... Can I just get some commentary on the pros/cons of Al vs. Steel? For instance: a) will a winch work equally fine with steel or Al?, b) does powdercoating stick to Al long term?, c) how does the AL handle impacts vs. steel? Stuff like that. I'm leaning toward Al just for the weight savings, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

 

I don't have aluminum bumpers but I will say that powdercoating sticks just as good to my aluminum roof racks as I have seen it stick to steel. I am sure pelfrey's bumpers are the same. The benefit of aluminum is that if you do ding or chip the powder the metal underneath isn't going to suffer much. With steel the rust will start right on the chip mark and then can get under the powdercoating. If you do steel and are really worried about corrosion do zinc coating under the powder.

 

I always like to ask how you plan on using your truck? For light off-roading and trails the aluminum bumper & armor works great & the light weight helps your MPG's of course. However, if you plan on doing any rock crawling at all, we recommend the strength of the steel bumpers and armor.

Powder coating adheres to either equally as well, so that's not the issue, as ZSCOTT stated, the issue is that the steel rust through very quickly when the p/c comes off due to scratches/dings. However, you can always "rattle can" it to touch it up. Tyler knows the kind that best matches.

A winch works equally as fine in either bumper-our aluminum bumpers are designed and have been tested for a winch so no issue there.

Keep in mind that with the aluminum bumper you'll only get about 1/4" of droop so running stock suspension is optional, or you can upgrade if you choose . However, if you run the steel bumper and armor you will definitely want upgraded suspension & 700# coils to accommodate the extra weight. When I got my Icon stage 4 I was up on spring rates, but the memory has faded. Do you know off hand if they'll handle steel?

 

Looking for mounting pics of the front plate winch bumper? How does that suck'a 'tach to the truck?

Haven't seen the question posed so thought I would ask here instead of a pm. Does the hidden hitch on the standard plate bumper allow one to keep a spare under the bed? And if so any idea if I can fit a 255/85/16 spare up there. I have read I can with a bit of convincing with the stock hitch.

Slowly starting down the Pelfry deep, dark hole with the purchase of my first skid plate.

Can someone post a pic of the hitch configuration from under the truck? I'd just like to compare it to the one I have now with my stock bumper. Paid extra for the towing package so I want to be sure it all works.

 

Our hitch replaces the factory hitch & we've had no issues with customers towing to the same capacity as the factory hitch.

I guess you just reach under the bumper to insert the locking pin? Mine has a key. Maybe I'm inept at getting it on, but I have always thought it was nice to see it as I was attempting to get the lock off/on.

 

You would have to look underneath to lock and unlock the pin, yes.

The benefit of having our hidden hitch is that it provides you with additional clearance you won't get with the factory hitch!

I was in same boat as you, spent the money to get it from factory. Now I don't have any proof besides my own experience with both factory and the hidden hitch. But from towing trailers I felt better when running the hidden than the factory. It's really sturdy and auto deters would be thieves because they would have to climb under and pull pin or unlock. It's a solid hitch that has taken everything I throw at it!

I keep telling myself that I need to slowdown on the parts for the truck...wife keeps giving me the "look", but she hasn't really thrown a shoe yet... Bought her a new wedding ring and that was way more than any single thing I've done to my truck, maybe more than all of them added together. I think I still have some points in the bank.
