Popping / clunking after lift

Can anyone confirm?

 

I pretty much use this or the service guide if i'm feeling like digging for specs. I can't imagine there is much if any diff in torquing between the gens.

I have something of that sort that is pretty consistent in how you are describing and it only started after my lift. Have had new brakes put on since, still does it. Had Toyota run through it twice, re torque everything, and it still does it. One time they did it and I had about 3k miles without a sound, then it came back. Been 2.5 years now. Mine def feels like a brake pad though, or like the coil slightly moving, its not as cluddy like yours, mines a bit more pop sound.

 

When I installed my Kings I had the same issue. I figured It might have been the CV's poping into place or something to do with the drive line of the truck. Do you have a differential spacer installed?

 

how did you fix it? And no. No spacers installed as of yet

 

I installed a differential spacer. This makes the CV's have less of a angle when the suspension is sitting flat.

What size life do you have? Could you post some pictures?

 

I don't have any spacers either.

 

I don't know if we have the same issue or not, but I've had this start happening (my lift has been on for a long time btw).

but, we are similar in that mine only happens when I first take off each day. I cannot get it to repeat unless I let it sit till the next day and do it again. Even after 10 hours at work it doesn't do it out in the parking lot...it's weird.

Does my video sound anything like what you're experiencing?

 

So I torqued the bolts to the proper 140 ft lbs.

Still getting the same noise/ clunk. It happens in drive, immediately as I release the brake pedal. I’m beginning to think it’s a brake/ brake pad issue. I know I’m do for brakes in about 2-5k miles. It’s definitely not brake pad shift because i have heard that noise and this isn’t it.

 

Did you torque your U-bolts? These should be torqued at install and after 100 miles.

 

I’ll double check those as well.

my drive shaft/yoke could also be the culprit after doing some more research. This noise started after the lift so I’m assuming since it was lifted, the yoke or shaft is now sitting at a different angle where it possibly may not be lubed?

 

So now it’s making the noise more often. It will still only do it once, immediately upon releasing the brake pedal and as the truck rolls forward/ reverse. It just doing it more often even after being driven and warm.

i has my gf back up the truck while I listened outside. I can hear a clunk coming from the rear end which leads me to believe that it may be my slip yoke or propeller shaft that needs to be lubed (hasn’t been lubed since I bought it). Proper lube is in the mail. for now I’ll try torquing they rear u bolts.

any advice for lubing they yoke on a 3rd gen?

 

You have to drop the shaft to disassemble the slip joint.
Get the tool for tightening the new bands on the boot.
Clean out all the old grease and use

$19 Ford XG-8 PTFE Lubricant - 3 oz.

This assumes your u-joint working angles are good... If not, correcting them might get it to unbind, if that's what's going on.

I'd definitely try the other things you mentioned before going to the slip joint.

 

I have the ford lube/grease on the way.

I just torqued my rear u bolts and they were indeed loose. All of the bolts needed to be torqued. I torqued them down to 80 ft lbs.

I know the Manuel calls for 73. I have read people torquing them to 85. I felt that 80 was a good happy medium.

 

Still clunking after the U-bolts?

 

it has been doing after sitting for about an hour or so. Gonna wait a bit and then try it again. I’ll update asap

 

Clunk is still there. Just tried driving it. I’m almost certain it’s the driveline. Getting frustrated now.

 

Lot of talk about torquing the lca cams bolts but there is a good chance they were never loosened to begin with. You have to mark them, loosen them, bounce the truck, then retorque with the truck sitting on the wheels. Great opportunity to pull your cam bolts apart and grease them.

 

I had something similar but it turned out mine was front body mount... I replaced with some new poly bushing and no more clunks. Also I didn't do a bodylift just a suspension lift.
