Possible transmission issue

So I bought my 17 off-road auto transmission last in nov and everything was awesome. Recently I've started to notice that there are times when the truck seems like it's bogging down. Truck starts to kick and shake a bit. Then when I'm coming to a stop right around second the automatic down shift is pretty hard. I haven't done aftermarket additions to the truck now have I done any off-roading yet. Truck doesn't even have 3000 miles on it yet. Anybody have this issue or have any ideas about it?

 

Yes not many complints but there have been some, myself included.
No deffinent fix yet but open a case with toyota to help any in the future anyways.

Some say its the torque converter. Others say its axle wrap. (Check your ujoints grease and torque specs(ubolts etc))

Open a case with toyota corp... do it now so that you have it documented in the future. get your oil checked... mine is a 2017 and it was 3 qts low from the factory. only way to protect yourself is to get it documented. they will prob give you a extended warranty if you fight for it


hard shift from 2nd -1st when cold

bogged down feeling...

rough down shift from 4th to 3rd (low fluid and needed the TSB update) fixed this

I hear a consistent womp noise when I let off the gas and Im coasting to a stop. womp womp womp when the axle or tire does a revolution... Not sure what that is from yet

Mine is in the shop right now for similar symptoms. Hard shifts and sometimes when I come to a stop I feel and hear a clunk from the rear end. Yesterday he said it might need a new driveline. They call today and said they're not sure what's up and that they're going to call Toyota headquarters or whatever on Monday. 6 month old $41k truck with 6k miles and now this bullshit.

 

Was the drive line lubricated at the dealership when you purchased the truck ?
We already know the driveline is insufficiently supplied with lubricant when its being assembled . If the dealer skipped out on a proper Pre delivery inspection and lube , chances are a simple lube may help . The slip yoke on the rear driveshaft is an area of concern .
If you dont own a grease gun , you are going to need one . Although Toyota is steering away from grease zerks , Your truck,s driveline should be greased thoroughly at every oil change

 

Ya I guess I'll need to buy a grease gun. He didn't say anything about it needing grease, but said that there was too much transmission fluid, which is different with many guys saying their fluid levels are low.

 

Cant see too much fluid causing harsh shifts . I would be interested to see what the techstream scanner has to say .
I believe you have two different problems .
1 - lack of lubrication in the drive line Causing clunks . A mechanical issue and easy to fix
2 - do you have the latest TSB installed ?

 

Yes I do and they want to call Toyota to check if they should "f" with the computer to put it back the way it was. I'll give them a chance to address it, but I'm thinking I need to open case on it with Toyota. I mentioned the u joints, lubrication etc and his response was that the driveline is an enclosed system. If I don't get a resolution or any intelligent answers on Monday, I'll pull it out of there and take it elsewhere

 

Yes , Toyota is going the way of Polypropylene universal joints .....No grease zerks
Ride the dealership as much as you can . After all , you are on warranty which you paid top dollar for .

With the transmission being a sealed unit excess fluid can cause harsher shifting due to higher pressures. Depends how much overfilled tho. Slightly isnt a concern... but a litre or more!

 

What speed are you feeling this womp womp womp at ?
Tires balanced ?
larger tires or factory ?
Take your truck up to highway speed , turn it off in neutral and coast to a stop without using the brakes . Do you still feel the womp ?

 

Transmissions have a vent at the top of the transmission for a reason . Pressure inside the hydraulic system is increased by the pressure regulator valve . These are not sealed transmissions . They are still vented to atmosphere like any automatic transmission . Toyota calls them a sealed unit because they dont use a dipstick with a filler tube . I agree that a liter or more will create foaming and pump cavitation

Any possible chance it could be with the way the gearing is set up on these trucks? When I had my 11 this def was not an issue

 

I tried that today and it can be anywhere from 20 up to 60. When thrown in to neutral or letting off the gas at all the kicking is gone. Tires haven't been rotated cause I haven't even come close to my first oil change yet. The kicking is really really noticeable on inclines of any type. We have a hill here that's not very steep at all and the speed limit is at 35. Kick kick instantly
