1st Gen it's under the hood.

I'll just repost this here since the link was on the 1st page....

I still haven't had the chance to do this mod yet. Does anyone know if there are other accessories that run off this relay or is it just the cig lighter?

hey, i hope someone still reads this!

i just bought a 2013 tacoma. i am trying to install my sirius portable radio with the car adaptor. it uses the cigarette lighter for power but since they shut off with the engine, it has to reboot every time the car is started. that takes too much time and is annoying. I have looked under the hood and under the steering column and do not have any relays that say power outlet. there is a fuse under the steering column that says power outlet but it is a standard 15 amp fuse. do you have any ideas where else i can find the relay? i can live without the relay mod if i am able to hard wire into the fuse block, but 1) any idea what fuses are always on? and 2) how do i do that? i plan on cutting the plug off and either grounding one wire and attaching the other to a fuse, or attaching both wires to both sides of the same fuse...which ever one is correct.

    any help would be fantastic!

The fuse panel you need to access for 2012+ models is behind the lower part of the dashboard, to the left of the steering wheel. If I remember correctly, I took out a few screws and took off that piece of the dashboard. Then there is one screw that releases the fuse panel, and I believe the cigarette lighter relay you need to alter is on the back side of the fuse panel. The relay is about an inch wide and tall (not sure what the label is). Once you remove the square relay, you pry it open with a small screwdriver, and it should look like my picture in post #20. You just cut a little piece of plastic to shove in there to keep the relay open. Some people use a little piece of folded electrical tape.
It's been a while since I've done it, and I don't want to take my car apart again to do a write-up. If someone does it, take pictures and make a write-up for everyone else.

This link might help. I didn't unplug any wires from the fuse panel just to access it like this guy did, and I don't think I unhooked the hood release.

I FINALLY got around to doing this mod. My truck is a 2011. You actually need to put something in it to keep the relay CLOSED. Not open. I would think it's the same for a 2012+. Just cut a piece of plastic or rubber to keep the contacts together. I used electrical tape and after the first day, it stopped working with the key off. The second time I used a piece of plastic. After already taking it apart once, it literally took me 5 minutes to do it again. Easy job and well worth it!

Old (reversible) mod from Tundrasolutions was to slip a piece of credit card (or last year's AAA card) between the NC contacts.
Non-reversible mod is to simply solder a jumper across the blades, or open the relay up (as needed for the credit card mod) and solder the NO contacts closed.

Good lord people, just put in a jumper wire with blade terminals. Why would you rig a relay?

Because people will run the jumper between the wrong contacts and smoke their harness.
