    I have a 2010 PreRunner 2.7L 5 speed Access Cab SR5
The day I bought her in 2015 (~97,127mi):

    Present Day (149,354mi):

Bought Mia in California at 97,127mi for $17,577.89. Paid her off on 07FEB20 (10 months early). I traded my old JK (boo) for her. I bought a PreRunner originally so I wouldn't be tempted to sink thousands of dollars into her like I did to the Jeep (thanks, guys). I also bought a PreRunner not knowing I was going to PCS to Colorado, so winters are fun. The current plan is to pay her off and then get to work on converting to 4x4.

No, I won't "just sell it and buy a 4x4".
Yes, this could go horribly wrong.

This is in it's very (very, very) early stages. This thread will be me trying to figure out/keep track of what parts I'll need for the conversion, consolidating information I might need for the build, and hopefully helping someone else out down the line.
Of course, once all parts and information are gathered, I will document the conversion itself as well as any other modifications to the truck.

I'm open to/actively looking for suggestions and feedback if I'm missing a part, if something I have listed won't work, or there's a better part to use.
I plan on doing the labour myself and getting most, if not all of the parts from salvage/scrap yards.

    :blahblah:
    Parts List:
    - MT, 4x4, 5 speed (R155F?)
    - 4th Gen ('02-'09) 4Runner Tcase? or FJ Tcase?? (I've heard both ways)
    - Front Axle/diff

From what I understand, everything I need can be taken off of a 4x4 of the same year/generation except for the Tcase which I need to take from a 4th Gen 4Runner or an uspecified year model of FJ. (The reasoning I've heard is that the Tacoma Tcase has electronic bits that are expensive/complicated.) I will also have to modify a crossmember to accomodate. Most of these that I've seen have been done on Automatic Transmissions, but I don't think there are any differences that should cause issues.

This could also just become the ramblings of a madman.

Is there a benefit of the FJ tcase over the 4Runner one? I'm also unsure of what year FJ tcase would work.

Gear ratio in the FJ if I remember correctly is lower. I find some good articles for ya.

Right on. You’ll need a 4x4 transmission also. The back half of the 4x4 version are different so that they can mate to the t-case. It’s possible you could swap some parts in the transmission, but it’s easier to just swap the transmission.

Ahh, that would do it. I found this article here.
I have the 4x4 transmission on there. "MT, 4x4, 5 speed"
I imagine I'll be able to pull it from a 4x4 5spd 2nd gen and it'll swap right over.

No worries, I had to double check. Knowing me, I'd leave that off of there. :p

Other concern with the FJ tcase is whether it's "bolt-on" with the 5spd manual transmission. I've seen it done with automatic and 6spd.

Alright. I've got plenty of time to figure it out.
I want to be as close to 100% certain on parts/compatibility before I start dropping money.
    I have much research ahead.

Cool. Let me know when you find out. I looked into it at one point and was told the 5sp MT, 4sp AT and 5sp AT all had the same output shaft.

I’m looking to do a 5sp MT conversion soon so this info will be helpful for me too.

Well, sounds like we'll be helping each other out a bit then. I'll be sure to keep this updated and share whatever info I find.
