I need to do this. So the breathers purchased at the dealer are two-way like in the front?

Thank you for the awesome idea. Did it last weekend with 60 miles on the truck. Only used 6 feet of hose, but it was plenty. What do you think of the slack?

I am looking to do this mod but I only have 5' of hose....If you have a check valve why not just run your hose up into the bed wall and secure it above the wheel-well? this appears to be the shortest path to higher ground. Is the use of Taillight compartment or gas compartment to keep dust down or water out or both or something else....?

In my thread on the diff breather mod, I put the real breather in the side compartment of the bed. 5 ft. of hose was enough, I recall... That was 6 years ago, see my thread (link in my sig).

Edit: Here was where the 6 ft. hose ended, before I cut a foot off of it:

Cool thanks for your write up. I ended up going straight to the top of the bed wall.

    I used a kit I ordered from Low Range Off-Road -
    http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/toyota-axle-housing-breather-kit-5-ft-hose-1-cap-1-barb-2-clamps.html

The breather looks like the 'true breather' from the front diff but it seemed easy to blow air out of, but very hard (maybe impossible) to breath air in through. I wonder if this will cause the vacuum issue in the diff. With the breather you use, can air (as well as dirt and water) go though it both directions easily?

    Thanks for you input

I have no clue what they are selling or why bother when the Toyota front breather is so easy to get and cheap. The front breather (that we are using for the rear with this mod, at the end of the hose, up high) you can breathe through (in and out).. no check valve as your linked kit mentions. WE don't want a check valve... that's what's wrong with the thing Toyota puts on the rear differential!!! A check valve doesn't breathe... it only lets gasses out! If you are concerned about any dust getting in and traveling 5 feet down the tube, then get a breather filter like K&N and others make... used on Off Road racers, etc.

Did this mod today (using 5/16 tubing), and there was a rush of air into the diff when I removed the factory valve. I like this much more than the factory setup.

The only problem I ran into was, it was just cold enough today that the tubing did not want to stretch, and I could not get it onto either the breather or union. Simple solution...put a cup of water in the microwave until it boils, take it out to the truck and put the end of the tubing in the water for 1 minute (tubing will be warm and flexible), shake any water out of the tubing and slide it onto the breather/union.

Couldn't have been easier, maybe took 20 minutes. This was a great thread I'm glad I read it, just need to bolt up with a clamp once i get a bolt and nut instead of using the zip tie.
