So they obviously moved the oil filter from the top of the 4.0L engine (which is great) to the bottom of the engine on the 3.5L. Really dumb change which doesn't surprise me being a 30 year auto tech in the dealership field. Anyone who does their own services knows what it is like to access the oil filter. Sucks. Especially with the TRD PRO Skid Plate.
Is anyone aware or know of a Oil Filter Relocation Kit for the 3.5L. This would definitely make things easier for service.

Thx for the input. Oh, my Toyota Care just expired so no worries about forgotten filters or drain plugs. I'll be servicing my truck now.

No I was referring to the little cap on the 4 liter Toyota oil filter base, about 90% of the ones I've changed oil on someone has left that cap off.
On your 3.5 liter just pull the 3 of the 4 screws then loosen the last one on the filter cover plate ( with TRD pro skid ) turn it out of the way then remove just the center cap on the filter install above tool tighten thumb screw and let the filter drain then remove the filter cap Then put it all back together with no mess . Just remember to install the center cap loosely so it comes off without the entire housing .

Cool. I actually work at a Chrysler dodge jeep dealership. Chevrolet before that. I work on other makes also just not a lot. Owned a 2012 Tacoma before my 2018 Pro. Definitely happy with both trucks. Thanks for the help.

Could be worse. Could be the Ford 5.4 where the oil filter is inside the front bumper cavity making it ridiculously hard to get to and any minor fender bender will puncture.

The first gen S10 with the 4.3 had the oil filter behind the drivers side head light .

Look into the ones the truckers use with the big compact paper towel filters and run 50k mile OCI. That would be worth looking into.

Actually , it’s easier to access the oils filter canister with the trd pro skid plates . It’s just 4 allel type screws unlike the regular skid plates wherein you have to drop whe whole thing down. One of the reason I upgraded to the pro skid . Overall , it’s still easier in the 4.0

Agreed, use a ratchet extension and it comes off nice and easy, not hard at all.

When I owned my 2012 4.0 I attached rubber fuel line to the filter drain. Routed down though the side of the fan and permanently attached it. It made a lot easier and no mess on the belt.

I just installed this kit the other day. It's awesome, the only thing is i've now got a distinct whirr/whine. It's nothing terrible but deffinitely worth noting that it's audibly changed the sound of my engine. I'm going to try and mount some material between the inverted housing and the radiator support metal where i've got it mounted as well as material where a hose is slightly touching an ac line and see if that helps. I'm running an amsoil EA15K51 Filter with OEM oil currently but will switch to amsoil 0W20 Signature next change.

Did you ever get rid of that whine? Still using this remote without issues? About to pull the trigger on this as well.
