    All,
I've done a search and not seen anyone attempting this configuration. I'd like to put a CVT RTT(Mt. Bachelor) on the roof of my access cab. The reason I want to put the tent up here is I'd like to keep the bed open for my dirt bike. Am I asking the impossible? I don't mind if the RTT hangs over the back of the cab a bit but I'd really like to have it so the RTT can be deployed from the roof.

Any thoughts? Anyone done this? Opinions welcome too or other suggestions/solutions as well so let me know.

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers, James

First month of ownership... This month I'm removing front air dam, and also Rhino lining the bed.
You can pretty easily drill into the roof. Right through the plastic trim strips.

The real question is if you should install tracks? I say no, save your money. Given the short roof there is little advantage to being able to adjust the towers later.

Both Yakima and Thule make systems designed to drill fixed points into the roof to attach the towers: Thule uses the 460 podium system with the fit kit 3114, and Yakima uses the control tower with landing pad 7.

Those drill in posts should hold around 500lbs. Drilled holes are both strong and easy to install.

Hey, thanks for the prompt response. Just so I understand correctly, that 500lb load is per rail, thus giving me 1000lbs load limit with two? If that's the case then that will work. My roof load will be 120lbs for the tent + 180lbs for me +125lbs for my gf + ~60lbs for the dog + 40lbs gear = 525lbs. I'd like to have a factor of safety built in there too.

    Cheers, James

Too bad Craig's truck and my truck are two different trucks and are both double cabs...

Craig's is mounted on his bed cap, and is the top picture in the dark.

My truck is the bottom picture. It is a double cab and mounted on Thule roof racks.

I don't think either one of those situations helps the OP any, because his situation is an access cab, which finding roof racks for can be a problem.

You need to find a roof rack option for an access cab and that is it.

No way James!!! 500lbs total for the system. DO NOT attempt to put in excess of 500lbs total weight up there, you'll crush in your roof or pop out your front window seal. There is a reason Toyota does not sell racks for the standard and access cabs, not enough span between the bars to distribute the weight...

I have an Access Cab Tacoma and use this Thule setup myself:
    - 400 XTR Rapid Aero Foot Pack
    - 2160 Fit Kit
    - 763, 150cm aero load bars

Be aware that many of these item numbers have been superseded with newer ones, you want these ONLY, Thule has made changes to their new line making their system incompatible with your needs, but there are many of these available still.

Alternatively, here is a TW thread for a Yakima setup on an Access Cab:
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...akima-roof-rack-track-install.html#post333609

In any case, I use a Thule "car top carrier" on mine and stick two mountain bikes on the bar ends. So probably hit near 400lbs??? But nothing like you are proposing. PLEASE keep it light up there. Make the dog sleep in the truckbed, cab, or under the truck (that's where mine sleep). And keep all the gear out of the tent, just you and the gf.

Also, your suspension may not be up to the challenge??? I really cant weigh in on that as I've never tried the rooftop tents - looks way cool! Hope you'll share some install pics with us.

    Best wishes. -Dwight

OK, sounds like a no go then for a RTT on the roof of an access cab. After further thought it looks like my best option is to get a motorcycle mount that uses my class 3 hitch, then I can put the RTT on a rack in the bed. I won't be doing any challenging terrain with the bike on the back anyway and my truck is set up for towing so it looks like this is my best option.

Thanks again for all the help folks!

    Cheers, James

im gonna revive this at the risk of sounding like an idiot. with one of those well built access cab racks from PrInSudo, do u thinka rooftop tent can be supported by the roof? also another concern would be attachment of the tent cause of the extra overhang. cmon someones had to have mounted a tent on an access cab roof!
