    I went ahead and ordered the URD. Does it replace the worn rubber bushing?

    No. You will need to replace the tip bushing.

    More than I can afford
    North County (Tri City area).

    Screws for the console are inside the console, under the floor of the unit (just pulls up).
    Couple of screws there, few more under the cupholder (also just pulls up).

    IIRC, it is 4-5 screws holding the entire console. There is a tutorial on here somewhere.

    Also, the TRD shifter comes with a new shift lever with bushing. URD does not. I thought long and hard on the URD VS TRD and in the end decided to spring the extra bucks for the TRD unit.

    Okay, broke out my Hanes book and it said remove retaining screws for boot. I looked, no retaining screws. WTF? I just wanted to take a quick look now I guess I've gotta take the whole console off. Dang it

    Where can I get the nylon bushing that goes on end of shifter? I thought I saw it on ebay but can't find it now.

    Just had mine fixed by a local mechanic, its usually not the nylon bushing, its in the stick shifter itself. Cost a couple of hundred to get it fixed including parts. Nice and tight now. Before my 2006, with 75K , it was like rowing a boat.

    Any Toyota dealer could get the parts with in a day or so. Jeff

    Had some thoughts on getting the TRD short shifter but decided not to, as the mechanic said Toyota had a new shifter mechanism available the next day. He showed me the old shifter and he said it was just toast. The new shifter probably is not a "tight or clicky" like your TRD but this one has about a 1/2" play in it where as my old shifter had 4-5" of play when it was in gear, really sloppy. Really worn out....Jeff

    So it was definitely the shifter mechanism and not the tranny itself? If so, that's a big relief. Do you happen to have a picture of the worn out one? I bought my TRD shifter used, so there's a chance the guy lied about the milage on it. I'm gonna start by replacing the nylon bushing and see what that does for me.

    Picture on the right is a TRD SS (longer tip) Left is stock OEM. The one on the right has the tip bushing that is replaceable. Both the OEM and the TRD uses the same bushing. The URD SS uses the same bushing as well.

    Correct and it shouldn't have been the tranny, as the mechanism shown in the pictures below you post, they were all loose and eaten up....the first thing my mechanic said was "shifts like new" ! Good luck , jeff

    Great. The tip bushing is only six bucks, so what the heck. Also the spring doesn't wear out, does it? If the bushing doesn't make a difference then I'll try a weighted shift knob, maybe even swap out for Redline if need be (just put in royal purple). I'll allow time between each remedy for break in.

    That was the trouble with mine a few years back:

    Ended up cutting the whole assembly apart and welding in a chromoly tube. MUCH tighter and no issues since.

    (yes it's installed backwards in that pic. I realized it when I went to install in the truck. :eek:)

    Hollow or solid stock chromo? That looks interesting. Other than weight and length, did you change the angle? I would totally make one up if I was still working in a fab shop. :)

    Hollow, thin wall, and the angle is the same. Length is...eh, I'm not sure how the length is relative to stock. I just cut it where it felt natural.

    It's actually lighter than the stock stuff and has held up to my abuse, which is saying something. :)

    My 05 6 speed (stock) (173k miles) just stopped going into R one day. Glad I found this thread as I have the bushings on order but if I am reading this right I may actually need the whole shifter assy.

    Shifter has a lot of slop while in gear maybe 2.5" each side while 5th (1") is the tightest and 1st (2.5") is the worst.
