I think I posted my solution a few years ago somewhere in this thread. I had the shakes and went back to the dealer and other tire shops so many times I gave up with trying to balance the damn stock tires.

I went ahead and got some new tires the Michelin LTX MS2 tires to change out the DUNFLOP AT2 tires and the ride has never been so smooth. I've the rotated them probably 4 times now and still no issues at all with the new tires.

I sold the DUNFLOPS so I made some money back, as they were pretty much new.

Thanks for reply, so before you got the new tacoma was the other one having shaking issues after the new Michelins ?

I've also have considered trading mine in and trying another one, but test driving to make sure there's no shake is not a guarantee my 2012 TRD Sport dbcab didn't have the shake till after 500-1000 miles running the Dunlop's. So in my opinion it's still a gamble I'm not sure is worth taking, this is also the second Tacoma for me that had this shake issue my last one was a 2000 extra cab pre-runner that started this after the first set of tries were replaced at 50,000 miles it never got resolved and I sold it at 150,000 miles.

Yes, even with the new Michelin LTX MS2 tires (that Toyota Corporate paid for), my first tacoma was still shaking. Although there was some cost involved, trading it in was my best option...if i were an attorney, i probably would've written a few letters; but, i was tired of the going back and forth.

I've had the steering wheel shake since my last '09 Tacoma. Now I have a '13 (aftermarket wheels and tires came off the '09 and went on my new '13) and still have this shake. As recommended by others I have scheduled another road force balance with the dealership and verified they have the Haweka adapter plate and they will use it. Stay tuned!

I traded my Taco in for Tundra some time ago because of this crap, dealer tried everything and all tsb's that were out there, nothing fixed it.. Anyhow on the Tundra at 30k it started it to shake, so I of course did road force numerous time at different places, alignment and was not about to go down the same road as the Taco of months looking for the problem, so for giggles I changed the brakes n rotors, even though it did not point to the rotors having issues.. easy quick change and cost me 120.00 when used coupons online, Guess what no more shake at all!!!!!!!!!!
May not be the answer for all but its worth a shot if you cant get rid of the shake..as it worked for me.
    Good luck!

I just had this start on my 2008 TRD Sport after putting on Billstein 5100's on the front set to .85 and new Cooper AT3 tires. I only notice it at around 65-70mph. I had the tire shop re-balance the wheels again today and will be heading to the highway in a few days for another trip. I'm hoping this took care of it but after reading the posts here I'm not going to hold my breath.

I only found ONE Toyota dealer locally here in Pittsburgh who has the Haweka adapter and does the road force balancing. I might try this if I notice any further shaking on the highway.

Has anyone out there ever figured out why this is happening? I read that someone stated there should be a recall for this and I fully agree. It is not a fun situation when you look down at your steering wheel while driving on the highway and it's bouncing back and forth!

I love my Taco and would hate for this to be the reason to dump it. Any thoughts or tips/tricks to try to at least reduce this would be appreciated!

had a slight shake at 60'ish for at least a year.
Went through all the stuff, replaced tires, etc.. lived with it, who spends that much time at 60? :notsure:

went back to the shop yesterday for a rotation and balance and boom!
The (bad)vibrations are pretty much gone.

    so whatever IDK????

I have an insane shake at 55mph. It's tire balance though. My tires are the definition of uneven wear... haha I wheel my rig to hard to ever keep an alignment. I think my steering rack is fucked and is the big cause of this.

Mine has done quite well since they did the road force balance and used the adapter this time. He did show that one tire (that was on the front) was out of round pretty bad. He put it on the back. My shake is gone up front now. Guess I may replace that one tire and use it as the spare.

'07 DBLB 4x4. 130K miles. Pro Comp wheels wrapped in 285/70-17 Cooper ATP's. Shake anywhere between 40-60 MPH and every once in a blue moon, wouldn't shake at all on the right highway.
Although my steering wheel shake started at 100K, it got progressively worse. Took my truck to an offroad shop in Wilson, NC and they pointed the problem to me immediately. Clear as day and it made sense. Ordered the Energy Suspension steering rack bushing kit from Wheeler's and went to wrenching. My steering wheel shake is GONE. Poof! No issues whatsoever. However, I think I need to look at my front brake rotors/pads, cause I get a slight vibe ONLY when applying the brake. Good luck to you all with this crap.

The brake vibe is from folks tightening up the lug nuts not in the correct torque and or pattern. I tell my tire guys they MUST follow the torque pattern even on the initial install and tightening of the nuts and the final tightening MUST be done in the right torque pattern. They finally listened to me this last time and no vibes when braking now, even from high speed.

You have to make sure you have the rear tires balanced before you rotate them to the front.
The guy at Deltona tire told me to come in at 6,000 miles for the first rotation on my geolanders ats. He said he will re balance the rears before rotating them to the front.
He said so many people just rotate them to front without balancing them. This is what causes the wheel shake

I got so pissed one time that when I got it home I just slid the floor jack under it and re-did the torque pattern myself. When I actually went in to thank them for doing it properly the last time one of the front counter workers interrupted me and starting saying something about having your rotors resurfaced I held up my hand and told him don't go there, I am a licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic and the only reason you get brake wobble is because some asshole didn't torque your lug nuts correctly. When I did get to the manager to thank him he admitted they finally did it like they are supposed to. I have never seen a vehicle so sensitive to torque pattern as this one. Maybe some replacement rotors will be different? Always glad to help,it's my tech support nature....

    Hi Guys,

I wish I had good news to report with my 2014 double cab pre-runner TRD , Toyota of Escondido last week had my truck over night and was able to duplicate steering wheel shake, after checking all tire's they found left front
to be defected on a road force balance machine it showed 20 when Toyota
says it should 13 or less. They replaced tire and truck drove smooth no shake
for 4-5 days then shake started coming back.

After dealing with this on my 2012 and never getting it resolved the service requested a return of my vehicle this is what I wanted no more dealing with this
crap. Toyota sales manager said they couldn't take it back even though the service manager has no clue on how to fix it.

Does anyone have some suggestion's , I could just sell or keep fighting for a return either way I'm going to lose money. For now I'm stuck with a defect.

Toyota Motor Corporation says I can do Arbitration "OH JOY"

    Thank you, Jon

I had balancing issues then I had my tires balanced on a machine at discount tire similar to road force then had an Alighnment done .

Now it's pretty damn straight and steering wheel had a very minimal wobble. Larger tires and lift will cause that from what I'm thinking.

I'm glad to hear that Discount improved your situation , I've dealt with this on my 2012 and my current 2014 tacoma. Both were stock and I only let the purchasing dealer work on them to prevent blame game.

The 2012 shook off and on over 60 and my current 2014 shakes mostly in the morning when I first get on the freeway, dealer replaced front tires on both with only temporary results. After dealing with this for 2 years I final filed abritration on my 2014 hoping for a good resolution .

I wish you the best of luck but with friends also dealing with this I think Toyota needs to stop avoiding this and find a fix.

End of last winter I put on a nice set of wheelersoffroad steelies on my 2014 Taco 5speed 2.7L. I slapped on Bridgestone Revo2's (265's). Right off the bat I had a significant shake. Took it to another firestone shop and they re-aligned and balanced and it was gone for a couple months. A few weeks ago the shakes came back but they were moderate. Took it to firestone and had them check the balance and rotate the tires. Now the shakes are SEVERE. All of these posts are making me ill. I can't believe this is 2014 and Toyota can't get it right and tire shops don't know how to mount wheels!!! Its unbelievable. I have reached out to wheelers off road for a solution. Tomorrow I am putting the ugly stock wheels and tires back on. When I come up with a solution I will slap the steelies back on and report. If anyone knows of a knowledgeable tire shop in the long island area please PM me.

Hey Jon, arbitration did not work for me. The GM from Toyota discredited the service tech and everybody involved. If your state requires you to complete the arbitration process prior to fling a lemon lawsuit, have a drive line specialist accompany you to the arbitration hearing.. Feel free to contact me or check out my thread about the process, maybe you can benefit from our struggle. Contact me via PM if you would like detailed info that might help you avoid mistakes that we made. Toyota will chew you up and spit you out, they DO NOT care about the customer.
