You can't. That is why rotating a bit can help.

It’s a bitch trying to punch CV out with the truck on the ground from underneath it, but I did it the smart way eventually with cable chokers.

    Bottom of my post here
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/lift-kit-question….721793/#post-25700008

Basically slip the ends of a single piece of cable through a 2 hole crimp but only smash a stopper on each end so it still slides, i.e. a choker on each end.

Not saying it won't work, but I always took off my axle nut and dissconnected it from the hub. I suspect it will be easier to get the cv out if you do so too. Never tried the other way.

Here is a better overview. 15min to setup once you get the parts but literally 2 good swings straight away and it’s out.
Just stop swinging hard once it pops a little bit out…

Remember the opening has to be facing down, which is impossible to see. So he needs to tap a little, then tap on the flats on the inner CV. Repeat until it comes out

It is a bitch. Rotate about 30 degrees and do it until it falls in the slot.

I don't think I ever noticed that or observed it in practice, done many a CV on many vehicles and never noticed or was informed of such.

    :notsure:

Cool to learn something new and I'll keep an eye out for it next time.

Yeah if you're in Florida I can be coerced.

It's really for putting it back in because at that point you can see the c-clip

I’ve always used a pry bar (at least an 18”) in between the cv and differential. Nudge on the cv axle as you turn it. Recently did this when i pulled my axles for installing long travel on the tacoma and had no issues. It was always my go to move when I worked at a transmission shop. Never had any damage issues from doing it this way. My .02 cents.

^this is how I do mine and I’ve never had to fight a cv to come out. Once you rotate to the sweet spot it just pops right out with very little pressure.
Some of the techniques I’ve seen people use are interesting to say the least.

The opening doesn’t matter when removing but makes a big difference when installing. Have the opening of the c clip facing to the ground.

Did the same thing for the same reason. The seal was leaking. And I will agree it was a pita. Plus I had an hour to take it apart, replace the seal and assemble it all back cause I had an appointment for alignment. Lots of hammering and swearing.

careful there is a little “disk” between the axle and where it goes in. I bent mine. Had to hammer it back the best I can.

I’m curious … what is the downside to removing the C clip from the axle permanently? It’s the knuckle that holds the axle in place. Maybe to keep the axle from sliding out when you remove the knuckle?
