Whoa, let me look up the laser level how to.

I have a nice Porter Cable Laser level.

Do you guys know what the cut-off measurement is from the top of the bedrail?

 

I think its like 17". Its right below the tail light

 

You just cut even with the bottom of the tail light. That's your initial measurment. Match it on the other end.

 

It's a good sized gap. It's supposed to be so it can flex on the trails without hitting.

 

Can I please get a closeup pic of the cut line just below the taillight?

I'm gonna take the advice of one of your build thread fan boys and down six tequila shots before starting the cutting process.

 

As stated, cut level with the tail light bottom. Billy said he likes to see 5/8" gap between the sheet metal and bumper when finished. I actually have less clearance in some areas than that, and after a three wheeling trips now, it doesn't seem to b a problem.

Also, make sure you rip this plastic thing off the truck in the photo before mounting the bumper,
It's under the tail light, held in with three plastic body clips, IIRC.
Just grab and pull hard to break the clips.

I don't know what it's called or what its purpose was.



Also, you can easily retain your fender liners if you want to, which I recommend. Just don't cut them, and then "tuck them in" to the bumper and secure later.

 

@Crom what are those bed tie down things in your bed?

 

They are removable cargo fittings that hold all my stuff down in conjunction with ratchet straps. Especially useful for go-fast trails, or off camber, steep obstacles, etc.

First off, I advise taking a welding course at your local community college. Then buy a good quality MIG welder. A 110 volt machine. 90-100 amp output is fine for any welding on our trucks. Then get whatever scrap steel you can and run beads until you never want to look at a welder again.

After all of this you will be ready to learn.

And p.s., read, watch videos, and live welding. Anything you can learn about welding and metallurgy will help. Jody from Welding Tips and Tricks.com is awesome and has some really helpful advice.

Sorry but have to laugh at your caliper. The company who made it took the time and effort to imprint an "IN/OUT" but couldn't be bothered to put vernier markings, which would have actually made it more useful. lol

 

Good catch.

It's a woodworking caliper, so I really didn't need it to be extremely accurate. The best I could do in my woodworking projects is 1/16" tolerance. That's on a good day.

Either of these will serve your needs. The Miller has a few more bells and whistles.
First project should be making a cart to hold welder and gas bottle. No point in buying one.
