Alright so I am very intrigued about the Lolo motorway and the Magruder (Lewis and Clark traveled this route), anyone else have other ideas on where to explore? I've looked into Fourth of July pass which starts by Coeur D' Alene, and I'd love to do the mile high drive if we have time, starts at the south end of Lake Pend Oreille and travels north east into Montana to Hwy 200 (easily done in a day). Any other ideas? And when are people most open? I've been told mid July isn't good so its look to be late July or August.

Heres the link to the thread

    What: Magruder Corridor/Lolo Motorway ID

Dates: Meet in Elk City July 25th, probably will take about 6-7 days to do both the Magruder and Lolo Motorway

    Where:
Meet in Elk City ranger station, 10am Saturday morning.
Ill be camping in that parking lot of near it Friday night

    416 Usfs Dr
    Elk City, ID

    Starting trail Saturday 7/25:
    Group 1:
    Northwesttaco
    Velillan
    penguins__cc
    12Trever
    Greddy
    JDAM

    Possibly:
    Oldmancrash

Link to the IDBDR: http://www.backcountrydiscoveryroutes.com/IDBDR talking about sections 4-6

    What to Bring:

Water: Bring enough for a few days worth (drinking, washing up, dishes etc...) for you (and who ever else you bring) plus at least 1 day. If something happens and we need to spend an extra night be prepared.

Food: At least 5 days worth for cooking on the trail, after each section there are a few towns to restock in.

Gas: The sections are about 110ish miles each without stopping. 5 gal is prefered, more if you have room.

Tools: Basic tool kits plus what ever spare parts you feel is necessary to bring

Recovery: Some way to lift your truck (hi lift or some kind of jack), straps, shackles, hooks, shovel etc...

    Cooking: Propane grill/stove top

Firewood: You long beds please bring some, you have more room than us short beds :D

Garbage: What ever we pack in will be packed out. Ill have my trasharoo, highly recommend one even to put over your tailgate.

Communications: Most of us use CB radios so that is very important. They don't cost a lot but do help a ton while on the trail.

First aid kits: We all do stupid stuff so bring at least a basic one..

I will bring my small chainsaw but if anyone else has one please bring it if you have room.

    Magruder map: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fsm91_055693.pdf

Each section is about 110 miles long so plan to camp at least 1 night per section, I figure one night per section and one night around Darby/Hamilton MT. I plan to be gone for at least 5-7 days including traveling to/from home. If you choose you can leave/join us in Darby/Hamilton, There are hotels there if you want to shower/sleep in a hotel for a night. This will be an awesome trip no doubt! Elevations get up to 8500ft so if you have any health problems be prepared.

More will be added to this post so keep an eye on it!!

    hmmm.... interested...

Did some fire road "wheeling" in 1980-ish near Lone Wolf Lake in Arlee area of MT in a 1967 Dodge Coronet (one wheel peel) and we didn't make it very far, lots of hiking and hot as hell, lake water was crystal clear and icy cold in July.

Don't ask me how to get there...

This will be an awesome trip if we can make it happen. Good excuse to get a RTT though, caugh caugh Dakota and Ben

JDAM has family up north so we may have some connections to places there, but also a lot of these roads on this website are FS roads, even though its an ATV website.

Awesome thanks! I'd love to run this trail just hope for less fires obviously.

The mile high drive goes from the southern tip of Lake Pend Oreille north east to clark fork area, along the green monarcs, the locals call it that name but I did that one a while ago. I had only read about fourth of july pass on that ATV website, didn't know anything else about it.

How many days should we plan on running this route? 5?

I know it is way out of the way, but I thought about doing the Magruder to Montana, then taking i90 up to Coeur D' Alene and then heading north, depending on time but if Im thinking the loop may be better, unless there are a lot of fires or washouts.
