I installed a set of Sumo Springs today on my '16 TRD Sport DCSB 4x4.

They install was super easy and only took 15-20 minutes.

I'm sure these will assist with towing a trailer or helping with loading the bed, BUT I did not get the lift of 1/2 inch or 5/8 that I've read about. I am installing Bilstein 5100s at .85 on the front and didn't want to do blocks in the rear so I opted for the Sumo Springs.

Measurement from center of hub to fender before Sumosprings was 21.75 and after installation 21.75. I do see the frame sitting on them but they just slightly compressed.

I thought these were good for 1/2 inch and improving the ride a bit?

Thanks for the clarification. I could've swore that someone on here claimed 5/8 on a 2016 but might have misread it.

I just installed these on my 2017 SR5 DCLB and I got 5/8" ( 1.8cm) of lift. I have a Cab high shell, a Yakima Space booster box (empty) and a hitch currently installed. Also a piece of carpeted plywood in the back so my dogs don't slide around. So the rear no longer had the rake it did stock. Ride is noticably stiffer in the rear now.

I wonder if you just get lift if your springs are compressed from having weight in the back.

I had the Sumos on for a few days. With my shell, the Sumos would contact the frame as designed and compress about .5". The ride was ver harsh. Like being on the bump stop all the time. They do squish more than the hard rubber OEM bumps but have a very aggressive rebound. If you have a heavy load they might be ok but if you expect to put them on and keep them there you may be disappointed like I was.

I even loaded the bed with about 100 lbs and it didn't soften it up any.

I cut the top "lobe" off them to see if it would help. While they were compressed only 1/4" the ride was softer but if I hit any bump they instantly made contact and would rebound aggressively.

When I finally get my hitch mounted carrier for my WR250R I'll throw them back on but still thinking for me unloaded most of the time and then having a bed with camping gear and two dogs ( ~400lbs total in bed) they may be too stiff for my needs.

One thing to note. If you haven't done so already check your U-Bolt nut torque. Mine were not 52 lb-ft. Probably closer to 30.

That is the first I have read this sort of review for them, most people say the unloaded ride is pretty much unchanged. Makes sense there would be some change if they are compressed some.

With an empty bed I don't think they touch unloaded. With no weight in the bed there's less inertia over bumps that they may not normally contact because the suspension doesn't cycle as deep. The Unloaded bed rides higher than my setup.

I would love to ride in another vehicle with them installed where one doesn't notice a change in the ride quality so I could see.

I want them to work but the verdict is still out.

They do touch with a unloaded bed... In fact they touch so much, they raise the bed frame 5/8". Already documented in other threads.

I think the ride in the rear of the truck is a little harsher than stock, from what I remember, can't really be sure, because I put them on the first month I had the truck... To be honest it rides like a truck rides to me... No harsher than any of the V8 I've owning the past... Of course I have them paired with Bilstein 5160's in the back and 6112's in the front.

Well I guess the ride will be acceptable to many and that's great if they work for you.

For me it made the truck ride like crap and I'm bummed that's the case as I've read nothing but positive reviews. I too ordered mine from and Amazon retailer. They are blue and carried the correct PN for my Tacoma. I read on other review from someone who got them from Amazon and received the wrong part ( Black instead of Blue) in the correct box.

Sorry they don't work for you... Like you said, most people like them, but everyone's got different preferences.

Here's a couple other threads on them:

Interesting, most of the feedback here was that is stiffens the ride just a bit, but pretty much everyone was happy. If you decide to sell them down the road please let me know, I would be still interested to try them out.

thanks. I checked them out and they what were what initially lead me to them.

    I found this thread https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/wtb-sumosprings.470884/

@taczilla , and @ARCOVT16 seems to be the only other TW members I've found that feels they perform similar to my experience.

I'll keep that in mind. I have cut the top lobe of mine off so they are .5" shorter. I'll update when I try them again.

That is my WTB thread actually.

I also wanted to get the claimed by most 5/8" of lift, so I will just look for another set eventually. Thanks.

I would not want bump stops (Sumo Springs) continually pushing back on my frame... ever.

Your better off with a 2" AAL and Wheeler's Super Bumps. The AAL keeps the frame up, and the bumps progressively cushion down travel under load without launching you back up in the air. My set up is 1" block, 2" AAL, and Air Lift air bags for when I tow heavier loads. I'm installing an All Pro flip kit and Wheelers Super Bumps this week.

I already have a cap, and recovery gear in the bed (extinguisher, HiLift 60" extreme, shovel, axe, and a milk crate full of stuff. There is a BAJA Mega Mule (70 lbs) going on the cap along with more gear in that to come.

I'll simply adjust the air in the bags (20 lbs. now) to find the sweet spot when the time comes. My rear suspension set-up is essentially 'dynamic' and can be adjusted top whatever I need.

The Sumo Springs are not intended to create LIFT. The correct part # for 3rd Gen is SSR-612-40 (4 rolls). The part # for 2nd Gen is SSR-610-40 (5 rolls). The guys getting LIFT are using the 2nd Gen Sumo's on their 3rd Gen trucks, thus the 5/8" of lift. You really don't want to lift your rear this way. They are meant to assist with towing and heavy loads, that's it.

I just installed the SSR-612-40's on my truck. Love the ride, tows even better. The rear only sags by 3/4" now towing my boat.

Right on the mark .Glad to hear about your decision and results .My exact experience. No desire to lift. Just helps the sag from trailer tongue weight. Considering the weight /arm, the potential moment can be huge. 20181121_134455.jpg

There is no 3rd Gen or 2nd Gen specific sumosprings, only difference is the capacity when compressed between these two.
