Sorry to hear about your Dad. Still helping my Mom with the financial & legal junk of my Dad's passing. It gets easier, time is the only cure unfortunately.

I'm over at the M6 crowd and reported there about a jerky jerky that occurs in first and second at low rpms. The truck will jerk a couple of time when accelerating from low rpms. I switched back to the 103a and the problem went away. I wonder if it's related to the clunk the auto guys are feeling.

Most of the twin turbo systems on BMWs use a small turbo to cover the low rpm range and a large turbo to cover the high rpm range. The smaller turbo also eliminates the dreaded turbo lag. I believe that this would be the best system for our trucks. Having just one large turbo won’t do much for the low to mid range torque which is what most people want.

I agree, but the low speed benefits of 1.04 outweigh the highway performance of 1.03 for me. I am hoping @OVTune can create a hybrid tune with low speed benefits of 1.04 and highway performance of 1.03 when custom tuning becomes an option. No clunk with either.

Just get a decent twin scroll turbo and it'll cover most of the rev range. Twin isn't as necessary anymore.

does anyone have 1.03 for 04b03? i'd like to try it. i don't really have any issues with 1.04 except i think it shifts to 5th too early then has to go back to 4th, then hangs 4th too long, then finally upshifts to 5th and then 6th. No clunks for me.

Aren't those engines inline fours/sixes though? So youre talking about a compound turbo system. I haven't seen a V configuration engine with two different sized turbos off the manifolds. That would create a pressure imbalance on the cylinders. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Most recent turbos I've dealt with are on the f150's. They're the same size.

That would be nice for sure but for me the 1.04 tune is well beyond 1.03 in terms of overall refinement. No clunks, never any flaring, zero surges (warm or cold) - even when pulling into my garage, and the low speed benefits of city driving / traffic are outstanding. I still enjoy ECT at highway speeds esp. where there's gradient but overall I get 19-20 mpgs and virtually every complaint I ever had on the stock tune has been eliminated. 1.03 > 70 mph was nice but not nice enough to outweigh 1.04 goodness!!

You are correct that BMW produces inline engines but the sequential turbos that they use also produce a slight pressure imbalance. The Tacoma owners who have put turbos on their trucks also have a pressure imbalance since their turbos only run off of one bank of cylinders so that does not seem to be a problem. I have read every post on the Turbo BS thread that was started on TW last year and maybe some of those who have a lot more knowledge than me could jump in. @Torspd was an early pioneer that has an excellent build thread with a brutally honest description of his successes and failures. @j0shu4@Brice@GioGuitarDude@boostedka@StAndrew@MrCrowntown@yota243@RedLantern@MadTaco461 are some of the frequent contributors that also may want to add some of their experiences. Some of them are going to be using the OV tune while others are using another tune. The link below is to the Turbo BS thread on TW. Hope this helps.

No doubt! Overall 1.04 is leaps and bounds better than 1.03. The truck runs and idles drastically better than 1.03. I would never consider going back to 1.03.

I have them if you still need them (87 & 91 octane tunes)
I have the TCU file as well if needed.

I think that may be pushing the 1300lb weight limit for the bed. Piping and intercooler mounting may be an issue too.

So, Iv'e been around this thread since it was in single digit postings, had to drool while guys were buying at first, and finally had the funds last fall to join the club. I started with ver 1.02. I prepped my truck before hand by changing the CPS out even though I was no where close to the recall list vins. The cps change did help my truck minimally, I have not had many of the problems, that seems to have plagued many. No super hard shifts, no clunking, ect, I did have some of the common issues of the stock tune, but no major issues on the tunes. This is my daily driver and hasn't really seen much in the way of off road yet, but just turned over 30k miles and I went ahead and changed all fluids (both diffs, transfer case, and a complete transmission flush and fill). Since tuning my gas mileage stayed consistently the same maybe a tiny bit better than stock. Flashed to ver 1.04 about a week after all the fluids were changed and have seen a consistent couple mpg pickup, truck has been smooth. I've only run the 87 tunes as gas is about 60c gallon more to get to the 91 tune, (I'll try it one of these days) but for now its fairly smooth with good driveability. Truck is stock except for a tonneau cover and sliders, no other extra weight yet....(The list is long but my money tree I planted didn't grow but withered away)

Thanks for the update guys! Wow not just me who's havingthe "clunk"noise. I thought it was something not related to the tune.

I'm experiencing clunk noise, and surge once in a blue-moon while backing up! Thought about switching back to 1.03 but I hate that gear dropping at turn... 1.03 is better at my opinion. MPG is the same on both 1.03 and 1.04. Maybe i'll switch back to see if I'm still experiencing the clunk noise. Will report back!
