Did tranny oil change #1 tonight. The easy way!

Got a good clip of her still whining on the way home, after I put the console back in. Would this not drive you crazy after a couple hours of listening to this wine glass wanna-be?

edit: just found this cool clip showing a 1992 Toyota transmission taken apart. Look at how little has changed in decades!

This pretty much sounds like my W59, whats the issue? My W59 shifts smoothly and makes noise in the gears that don't have a 1:1 ratio (every gear besides 4th). Isn't that what meshing gears do. How loud is that whine?

Not as loud as it used to be. Before I changed bearings it overpowered my Pioneer radio; now it's just a nuisance. Thankfully it'll disappear completely now if I go over 57 mph.

I don't care so much about the 1-3 whine. Most aging Toyotas do that, and I don't have to listen to it for long.

Just out of curiousity, does your W59 shake the shifter in 5th gear? Mine moves the knob front-to-back over 1/2" sometimes, but only when under forward load, and I can sometimes make it go away by shifting out of 5th and back into it again. Almost like the 5th sliding hub is engaging the synchro hub crooked and it's wobbling the fork. It's not the shifter shaking like a resonance thing either - it'll move my hand if it touch it. Actually one lady friend joked about letting her sit on it, but that's another story.

That was my primary motivation to take it apart. I didn't know between the loud whining and the shifter dancing all over the console whether 5th gear was going to spit itself out of the case or not!

My W59 doesn't really shake the shifter other than a little vibration from the engine. I have some motor and tranny mounts that are getting ever sloppier so my whole stick and 4wd lever like to move under acceleration but that is a different problem all together. My fifth gear is honestly pretty quiet and tight, definitely not noticeably louder under any circumstances.

Could yours have a meshing issue. Most differentials will whine and get hot if the various settings are even minutely incorrect. Check and see if your tranny is getting super hot.

There's nothing to set like preload or gear depth like in a differential, fortunately. Just the thrust clearance set by the end clip that's on the tight end of spec.

As for a meshing issue, that's what happens when the bearings get worn. The gears don't line up the way they're supposed to, and then they wear into a new pattern and whine. Even with my new bearings, they'll continue to whine because the wear is already done.

Nope she doesn't get very hot at all. Just the heat she's gonna pick up through the bell housing. In fact after a few miles and the oil warms up the whine gets a little quieter.

The shifter shaking has to be from the sliding hub sleeve. I can't see how it could be anything else. The countershaft can't move around anymore, everything with 5th gear is nice and tight, and that end 5th gear spline piece is very firmly fixed to the countershaft. When I push the throttle, the torque is transferred from the end piece through the sliding hub sleeve to 5th gear, so the sleeve has got to be wobbling when under load. The hub sleeve engages the 5th gear fork directly so that motion would be transferred to the shifter.

It's just difficult to see how that would happen.

I did a quick google search and found these too, I know I'm not alone

I have a 2011 with 73K on it now. My R155F has had a slight whine under certain loading conditions since day one and my shifter shakes in 5th when under load. It has always done this and it doesn't bother me. I run her hard but change the fluid more often than suggested. I just changed it for the second time with Redline MT90, which does help it shift when cold.

Listening to your video it doesn't seem too far from normal, maybe a little louder but not much.

Nice job on the rebuild.

Around 1800-2100RPM and/or 50-57 in 5th? Particularly under light loads.

Sounds about right. I notice it but haven't done any close analysis.
