Timing Belt, Water Pump, etc Parts?

The OEM balancer/pulley assembly has threaded holes on the back side. If I make a tool to hold the balancer in place during re-torquing, do I want to use a threaded bolt? That is what that SST looks like it does.

 

Did you find that a puller was required to get the assembly off the crankshaft?

Thanks. I saw that SST and that is the plan. Do you happen to recall if the threads on the back side of the pulley are m8x1.25?

 

Sorry, I got my threads/dates mixed up. Yes on the M8-1.25, if I recall correctly.

 

That is for pulling the harmonic balancer and pulley assembly, I think Mike is looking at a tool to hold the balancer while un-torquing/torquing the crank bolt. Did you end up getting the SST to hold that in place with the threaded holes?

unthreaded holes can fit a 3/8” bolt

 

I like @zero4 design overall. But I might try it with a bolt threaded into the balancer.

 

Eh, I made and used his design and it works well. Shank’s going to hold more torsional force than a threaded portion thats not engaged if you don’t bottom it out. Plus if you fubar something somehow, it comes right out.

 

I just have the Schley tool that you and I used that day we did the job in your old shop. Have used it a couple times, and you're welcome to it Mike @Digiratus, if you want to risk it .

 

Ah, ok. I vaguely recall using it (man that was a long time ago!).
I could see modifying it to drill out the studs and putting net-fit through holes for the long bolts. Seems like that would solve the potential problems.

 

I'm glad you put it that way. That is exactly what this is all about. I don't want to risk it.

 

I mean, I don't think Dan or I knew it was a risk when we were doing it, and I didn't know the second time, either... else I'd probably have looked at making something like you are. Will be curious to see what you come up with so I can borrow/copy!

 

Respect! I do believe that this has been overlooked in all of the Timing Belt/Water Pump writie-ups out there. But there is a growing number of incidents of this failure. Probably due to age and mileage.

I am going to hit you up for help in building this tool.
