It could have been an error programming them to start with? If not at the factory, then did your dealer or someone else install new wheels for you?

That said, you can either ask the dealer, or a tire and wheel shop, to scan the TPMS codes with a handheld tool. From there, you can check to see if they are correctly programmed into the ECU yourself with the Carista app.

See the TPMS pic in this post:

Everything is stock. They said that it was reading like it was learning the tire locations and to drive it 25 miles. I've got to go in again next week to have them install a new dome (mine developed a short), so I guess they'll just have to look at it again.

They will reset and start reporting even when going less than 25mph (at least mine does). You just have to drive a long enough trip that seems longer than 15min to me. I've run into this when airing down for trails. It takes a long time and it is hard to do 25 or more around here.

At this point, I'm not sure that it will help you, but be sure to be stopped and hold the TPMS reset button until the dash light blinks a few times. Then, go for a drive where you are not stopped for about 15min or so?

From what the guy at the service department told my, I needed to drive 25 miles in distance, not speed. I did try to do the reset myself yesterday coming back from a camping trip, but I didn't follow the directions very closely (oops), so I'll give that another try... maybe it'll save me another hour or two at the dealership.

No big deal, but the OM (Page 467 to 469) says 25mph or more for about 10min. My experience has been a bit different than that (< 25mph for what seems to be more than 15min?).

I will say that when rotating tires, resetting the positions using the same procedure on road, they started reporting pretty quickly (> 25mph for just a moment or two).

    Good luck!

Edit: I have been trying to imagine how one antenna installed in the Taco can determine the wheel location for each sensor all by itself. The only thing coming to mind is that it compares internal RPMs to what what is reported by the ABS tone rings and steering wheel angle sensor when going around corners? All four tire RPMs will be slightly different. I'm no programmer or electron expert though.

Well, I did the reset as instructed in the manual. Drove for a little more than an hour; mostly around 60mph on long back roads, aaaaaaaand.... still not reading. Guess I'll be spending a couple hours at the dealership next week, oh well.

You gave it your best. Hopefully, it is something simple.

The antenna module is either in the headliner or behind on the rear pillar trim. I can't exactly remember. If it is in the headliner and they need to get at it, it might be worth asking them to take a look at the third brake light to make sure it is sealed tightly. There were issues with them in the past, esp on the DCs.

I have a 2016 Tacoma and was having the same issue with the dash “- - -“ not picking up the tire PSI. I was advised by a Toyota Specialist to bring my tire PSI down under 30PSI then try resetting again and take it for a drive for about 5min. Well within 2min. all the monitors started picking back up on the tires PSI again. Hopefully this will help anyone else who has been having this issue.

Sorry for the slow response. I went in about a month ago, they said they had to open a tech case. I waited patiently, and got busy with the holiday and stuff, realized it had been a month since I went in, so I called to check on the status... not only was the ticket closed, but my service rep no longer works at the dealership. They've had my truck now for going on 3 days with no results; they did pay for a rental, that just means I'm driving a very disappointing Nissan Frontier. It's pretty ridiculous that certified Toyota mechanics at the Toyota dealership can't fix the issue. I've just about run out of patience with the dealership... maybe if I make enough fuss I can get some free stuff out of this, lol.

I had this problem, took it to dealer and they told me I had to have my tires taken back off the wheels so they could get the SN off the after market TPMS'. Took it to NTB, same thing. Went to Pep Boys and was in and out in 15 min, cost me $10. Guy over there told me he gets it all the time, something about the reader they use.

Finally got my truck back yesterday; still not fixed, but they are "pretty sure" the problem is with the dome light wiring harness. Apparently the the tpms is tied into it... I'm not holding my breath. Gotta go back when the harness comes in, probably some time next week. We shall see. So far dealing with the service dept at the dealership has been a real sh*t show. I called to check on the truck yesterday because I hadn't heard anything the day before and was waiting for a call back. The rental company called wondering when I was bringing the rental back because the dealership called them and said that I had picked up my truck!
It's been a trying time :annoyed: haha

Bumping this up because I'm having the same thing happen. After putting my new wheels and tires on the truck (with the Toyota TPMS sensors) everything was reading just fine for about 5 miles until I decided to reset the system when I got home. Since the reset, I'm just getting the "---" blanks at all 4 corners. I've followed the reset procedure in the manual to the letter, 3x, and nothing. Now I have the (!) yellow light on in my dash.

Did you reuse the original sensors from the old wheels?

No. Bought brand new TPMS sensors for the 3rd gen Tacoma from Toyota.

Did someone program the new sensor ID codes into the truck's ECU (using a tool that connects to the OBDII port under the dash)?

I ASSUMED so, but didn't specifically ask. So obviously that's my next move now...to ask. Thanks!
Silly question, but does this require a dismounting and remounting of the tires?
