Getting the TRD intake and exhaust are definitely on my punch list

Hey guys, I have this intake and am wondering if it is worth keeping the oiled air filter or moving to a dry filter?

You won’t notice any change in performance either way. The oiled filter can easily be cleaned and reused to save a lot of money over time. You can get the cleaning supplies pretty cheaply if you don’t get the TRD kind. The cheap spectre cleaning solution and oil works fine.

Thank you OP for your write up.
Just did the TRD CAI today.
Could be the placebo effect but the truck did feel quicker and my fuel mileage improved, from 17.4L/100km to 16.2L/100 km although it could be the ECU reset after disconnecting the battery.
Together with the Pedal Commander (which i find too bulky and plan to replace with the Sprint Booster) it definitely woke up the truck to the point that I'm no longer disappointed with it..

    PS: what is WOT????

I installed the TRD CAI today and I have ordered the AFE TBS almost 2 weeks ago and its supposed to arrive in a cpl weeks or so as its on backorder.
Only went for a quick spin, about 25km as the roads were busy and I got annoyed.
The truck felt preppy, and at my return the fuel mileage showed 16.2L/100km, down from 17.4 which 8f true would pay up for the TRD CAI in fuel savings alone in a cpl months.
I'll try and remember to post an update on this thread on the AFE silver bullet TBS, 8f not ill definitely write up a review on a new thread.
Oh, I just remembered, I bumped up the power on the Pedal Commander when I went for the spin, so the prettiness is probably a combination of the CAI andthe Pedal Commander..
    Shoot...
And, the fuel mileage could be a result of disconnecting the battery while installing the TRD CAI.. Also, it was pretty warm outside today, +10C, exceptionally warm for Calgary compared to the past couple of months since I've had the truck..
Fingers xssed it's not wishful thinking...

There is a alternative cheaper version of the pedal commander. With super small size. You should try that and let’s know how compared to pedal commander.

Well, thank you fir the advise, but that's a hard pass from me..
There's a couple of reasons I won't try cheap.. too poor to afford spending the $$$ twice, and, I own Doekter TUNED, we do Custom Performance Tuning and deletes mostly on diesels, although we caught the occasional Yukon and Chevy Cruze..
I'd get laughed out of any work going the cheap route...

I would've never considered a Toyota a decade or even 5 years ago, but I work from home doing the soft part, and got tired of having to plan ahead my trips in the winter so I can idle my truck 20-30 to run a few errands; so a gasser works better.

Stickshift, pick-up truck , 4x4 and the resale value were the decisive factors as I had to trade in at a loss a perfectly fine VW Golf City TSI that was only 2 years old and had very low mileage(wife's old car that became mine after I sold my Cummins and she got the VW TDI Sportswagen MT that she always wanted).
So, the new Tacoma will be my new Guinea pig to try all the possible mods and tuning, as it looks like a niche I was completely unaware of.. More expensive parts make for a better mark-up.

So far so good, I missed my 650 HP and the torque of my sold Cummins at first, but after the last 30" of snow we got in one night I realized that I couldn't cut it in a VW Golf.. Sh!t, my family couldn't cut it, wife took my truck to go to work and grocery shopping as our cheap mayor never sent out the plows and waited for the Chinook to melt the snow..

Cool story, but pedal commander and sprint booster are the cheap knockoffs without real performance gains. Get a tuner & supercharger....

If you own a tuning shop, why don't use tune the taco and get rid of the pedalcommander?

You're funny...OV Tune probably put in tens of thousands of hours into their tune, all available at a fraction of the total cost distributed over thousands of units... easier to just buy the VF and use a tried and proven platform....

Still waiting to see what OV Tune does for the 2021.

Personally - I thought the Pedal Commander and Sprint Booster products were to overcome the "floating" RPM problem caused by the Drive-By-Wire programming of the Gen 3 Tacos, NOT to add any direct HP or performance gains.
I have the OVT 2.0 tune in my 2017 AND honestly, the hanging throttle response and nasty shifting is STILL a real PITA. Orange Virus did a nice job tuning the 3.5L engine, but by NOT fixing shift points or anything else - left the job only half done.

I also added the shift Pro module that works in the "S" mode - but neither of those 3 maps solved the issue either.
I am going to try the Sprint Boost product and hope it Band-Aids it "good enough" for me to live with - But Toyota sure has left its customer base high and dry!

Either they re-design once again or they fade into the sunset beginning NOW! (IMO)
What good is all of that Pro and rock crawling BS if it runs and shifts like $HIT?

For the people who ordered the TRD intake piece by piece, what part numbers did you use? I got confused reading OPs original post after number 3). Other than the intake flow accelerator at number 8. From 4-7 I just don’t know the part numbers

In case it wasn't already explained the Toyota TRD filter is just a K&N filter. I'm not sure why some people don't understand Toyota had K&N design them a version for them to sell. You ask any knowledgeable Toyota dealership if anyone doesn't believe this. You can even use K&N cleaner on the filter because it's same oil filter just different colors. It's better to Buy K&N pipe filter kit at 189.99 and then buy the baffle for the box. Now if you like TRD emblem and slightly bigger lid purchase the lid also. But k&n pipe is louder and less restricted makes more sense. Good luck
