Unknown Popping Sound

So this has only happened twice but it still bothers me. Last month while turning around on a dirt road I heard one pop sound as I pulled up a berm. Never happened again the rest of the trip and I was unable to recreat the sound. No poppoing until yesterday. When off-roading this weekend no sounds. Pull out of a drive through while slightly going downhill then heard another pop but this time you could feel it. I've check CV's, ball joints, brakes and everything looks fine. Mechanic double checked said everything is good at this point. Any ideas?

 

Is the steering wheel at full lock one way or the other when the noise happens?

 

No but it is during a turn.

 

Just some possibilities. Loose lower control arm bolts. Upper control arm making contact with spring. If it was full lock I would say its the steering stops making contact.

 

I'll check the bolts. This did start right after I got an alignment for a long trip.

 

Do you by chance have step bars mounted?

 

Yes, they could have forgot or not completely tightened the alignment cam bolts.

 

Im hunting down sounds as well, its an ugly road especially when the truck runs, drives and performs perfectly fine

I'll check those out tomorrow. I want to find the problem now and not when I am in BFE next month on a 4 state road trip to Boulder!

 

that sound drove me nuts until I finally figured out that it was as I get going the Centrifugal force would sling the mud out of the tire treads up onto the fender wells.

When Input the Bilsteins on a few months ago I put everything on at specified TQ and didn't have any issues. The clunk first happened two days after an alignment so I'll go check all those bolts.

Did the suspensin flex at the time of the popping? I finally got around to replacing my seized LCAs over the summer and my creaking/ popping noise went away...until just recently - now I need to grease the LCA bolts again

The first time yes perhaps technically a baby flex yesterday. Never on a trail though. I was just thinking while walking the dog that the LCA are old and Were a PITA to move to put on My Bilsteins. Wonder if the popping sound is the LCA? The alignment guy said he had to heat the crap out of the bolt to get a proper alignment bet that didn't help the bushing out.

 

There's a good chance you're hearing the bushings. Honestly, knowing you a little, I wouldn't worry if it's them. Nothing is going to break and the only way to deal with them is to cut the bolts and replace your LCAs. The new bushings are $200, not including the cost of LCAs. If you have a good alignment, I say fuck 'em. Deal with it if/ when you decide to do a serious upgrade to your suspension.

I predict you'll be hearing from them more now that they were heated for the alignment.

If it's anything else, like Tanner mentions above, you obviously want to deal with it - but you know that, being competent with a wrench.

I'll check everything again. When I push and pull on the tire everything seems fine. There has always been a little play in the steering wheel but I was told the bushing change for that is not worth the trouble and the play is barely noticeable. When I felt the popping yesterday I felt it in the peddles and not in the steering. I will fiddle with the LCA a bit more.
