URD INTAKE

    Yes Yes.. I know 10000 of threads regarding this... or something similar. I just ordered my URD intake after looking over plenty of reviews and reading forums for about a month. But still have a few questions.
    1. Is cutting into the sheet metal going to be hard, are there any guides on this or does it provide how to do it in the instructions when I get my kit.
    2. Is the MAF sensor really necessary what are the benefits of it. I've read that you don't need to buy the after market one from URD unless you plan on going SC. I might but that won't be for a long while. But I've also read that their MAF sensor will increase performance by a great deal 25 hpish. Can anyone vouch for this or would that 200 be a waste?
    3. If I do need the MAF sensor will getting rid of my OEM one and hooking up the aftermarket one be a pain in the ass?
    4. How long does this install take with everything should I be thinking about dedicating like an entire weekend to it or just a couple of hours?

    Cutting the sheet metal around the radiator right side should be easy with proper tools. You will need to remove a bunch of stuff, mainly the grille to have access for where it gets trimmed.

    The MAF calibrator is not plug and play but could be with a simple optional, but expensive harness.
    For 2009 and newer trucks the computer plug has been unavailable, but that may have changed, best to call URD and ask.

    If no adapter cable exists, the install involves some cutting and splicing to your engine computer wire harness. Again should be fairly easy with proper tools and skills.

    There is a guy selling a splice kit so you do not need to cut your wire harness. The MAF calibrator I got used has this kit. Seems pretty nice, have not installed it yet. This kit involves taking apart your computer connector.

    Either way, it can be made to work. Seeing you have a 2012, you'll be cutting or buying the other guys adapter kit.

    In regards to the calibrator, you will need the specific calibration for your engine, year and all mods done. If you plan to calibrate yourself, you will need the tuning computer cable, equipment to see how well the engine is doing, and the fittings welded into the exhaust to monitor how well the engine is doing.

    URD provides a template for cutting the sheet metal. Template is good, but it's not the easiest thing to figure out where to place the template on the sheet metal, I had to cut some more material from the bottom area. Also, I went to Harbor Freight and bought an electric body saw for $25, which worked well.

    Now, I think you are a bit confused on your MAF questions. The MAF sensor itself just needs to have it's wiring extended to move the MAF sensor from its stock location to just behind the URD filter. Same sensor though.

    The MAF Calibrator is an add on box that you tap into the stock ECU wiring harness, behind the glove box. Need to tap or get the harness that was mentioned previously. Not difficult to do, but requires tapping and cutting some ECU wiring, which can be a psycological problem....

    As for what they do. I've had the aFe stage II SI and the URD. As far as actual performance they both seem to be about the same to me. Not much difference from a daily driving perspective, except noise level, but on my G-Tech I got about a tenth in the 1/4 from both.

    I added the MAF Calibrator to my URD and noticed a nice little kick. Note that the MAF Cali only affects the fuel tables when in open loop mode though. Although,,, you are probably in open loop more then you might think, a ScanGuage or Ultraguage can confirm. I like the combo myself. It's not a huge affect, but it's a nice kick. I equate it to what I saw with a Superchips on an 02 Dakota 4.7 which basically added a few degrees on timing.

    I tend to remove parts that I don't see any benefit from (aFe Stage II SI, Volant scoop, TRD catback), and the URD and MAF Cali are staying.

    I'm still running that Volant scoop / homebuilt intake. You were correct it didn't really add any MPG. It is better than a stock airbox. The cool air is noticed easier with the Volant, but not anything leaps of performance better. I have shown a couple of members here the setup, they really like how clean it looks.

    So, I got more parts, including a Volant airbox / intake tube / filter assembly. Any thoughts in regards to those setups.

    I did pick up a URD MAF calibrator too. Unit is new and never installed, but is missing the cover and instructions, but did come with the adapter kit harness for newer trucks. I was considering calling Gadget for the info, a mapping, and if possible a lid & screws. Learning more about it, I'm leaning towards holding off, buying a new one, getting the O2 sims, and when I have the exhaust built install bungs to road tune it myself. Curious of your thoughts about installing this stuff and calibrating it myself.

    Ahhh, forgot who I sold it to, glad you're getting good use out of it. As far as adding the rest of the Volant parts, just keep in mind that some get a code thrown with the Volant due to the box-to-TB tube size difference, but a MAF cali would fix that and I've heard Gadget has a map for that.

    Not sure if I'd worry too much about a lid since it's installed in the cab, but if it's available why not.

    Calibrating yourself, sounds like some fun, but not something I plan to invest in myself since you need a good A/F sensor and reader to do it right. Might just run your config by gadget, get a map and see if you think you really want to go that far.

    Lastly, on the harness, It's a good piece of work and I was seriously considering getting it, but after looking through the instructions posted I figured there was just as much risk in tapping and cutting the ECU as there was of bending or mucking up the pins themselves.

    Hardest part of tapping the ECU lines was getting the insulation stripped without breaking the wires. I got all the taps done right except for one where the wire broke for a tap connection, ended up having to tie the three together and worst part was, it was the shortest wire of them all. Did get it done though.

    Torspd and Justice, my URD Calibrator I bought came with that plug and play kit from NUT.

    Overall it looks fairly straight forward, but I was surprised at how micro and delicate looking those pins and sockets appear to be.

    Like most URD calibrators bought here, few have the instructions for the proper year or do not even have instructions. Mine was the same but worse, no instructions, missing cover and screws, but did include the the harness kit.

    I like Nuts plug and play kit, but am leaning towards installing it a different way. Time will tell once it is finally installed in my truck.

    Now my focus is on how do I want to tune my truck, the obvious is to add bungs and do it right.

    I just feel wrong calling Gadget about a tune or even the wiring instructions since I did not buy it from him. I did call him inquiring about several items, my call went to sales voice mail and no one ever called back. (This was in reference to purchasing stuff, not asking for instructions or possibly a cover for my calibrator). He is probably very busy so I will give it a few weeks and try again.

    Kind of too busy the next couple of weeks myself with day job. I have all the diff conversion parts so I want to focus on installing my Truetrac into the third I bought and getting that built. Also lets me save some $ for a bit.

    Good find. Thank you sir. I skimmed through a few pages here but couldn't find it.

    It just baffles me how people can sell certain things, that are missing components that would be hard to find. And why the cover would be removed in the first place? Either way, if you call URD and select the option for tech support, you will get ahold of Gadget. I am sure that he would be able to at least email you a copy ot the instructions. I know that he has before.

    You could also try starting a thread here or on XRU, asking for the wiring instructions. There has to be someone who can help out with that.

    I have the instructions for the 09, and could probably make a copy of the software, assuming it's not locked in any way. Just not sure if there's any diffs between 09 and 10

    As you say it may be the same, I honestly don't know.

    Mapping wise, the unit I got is already loaded with a stock intake program for a 1GR. I was hoping to try that before installing the Volant airbox. So it would be the Volant scoop, and the tubing to hookup to the oem airbox, along with a drop in K&N.

    I posted a request over on XRU about the instructions and even the cover. I could post here, but just believe the XR folks are more into tweaking than people here.

    I'll post more as things get installed.

    I have a stockpile of parts and need time to get them installed.
