What belt size to bypass ac compressor? Please help.

    Hey fellas, I have an 05 6cyl. Trd off road. The ac stopped the other day with a whine from the engine bay, a burnt smell, and a blinking ac button. It must be the clutch I'm thinking. Am i right?

    It got pretty ghetto last night when we took the kids school shoppin, And I had to have the windows open while it was pouring rain just so I could see through the fogged windows.

    So, until I can get the ac fixed I'd just like to get a smaller belt and bypass it so I can use the heat this fall/winter, as it's whining under there any time I turn the fan on. I know I can route a string around the pullies to measure, but with work/ school/ and the kids back to school and sports etc i dont have the time to jack it up and mess with it so im wondering who knows what belt to get...

    I searched and didnt come up with anything but the relay issue but to my understanding that wouldn't be my issue here.

    Or if you guys have any other ideas im all ears.

    Are you saying the whining/noise happens ONLY when you turn the fan on??

    Yes, only when I turn the fan on whether it be the ac, heat or regular air.

    I'm no ASE mechanic, but I wanna say the problem is not your a/c's compressor/clutch.

    Heat and ventilating air have no relation to the a/c compressor.

    That's what I thought too of course, which a
    Had me thinking blower motor, but the sound seems to be coming from under the hood. It got me thinking then that maybe the ac is used a bit at all times? I'm not sure. Is this the best forum section for this?

    A/C compressor engages when you turn on the air conditioning and/or defroster. Make sure you do not have temp control set to MAX air conditioning, and that the round switch (A/C on-off) is not illuminated. With A/C off and defrost NOT selected, and temp control NOT set to max cool---the compressor will not engage. Of course, if your compressor clutch is fried/locked up all of my instructions are for naught!!!

    Open the hood and listen to where the sound is from.

    Thanks for your time in responding man... What do u mean by max, the other round recirculate button, right?

    And if the comp is ceased, it'll make that sound on all settings you're sayin?

    you could just un plug the compressor clutch as well .

    It will not try to engage

    Ok, update, I hadnt covered every base and thought it was doing that on all settings but yes, just when the ac is on, or either of the defrost settings are selected.

    Find the wire that goes to your AC clutch and unplug it. With this done, you can run the blower on the windshield to deal with fog/frost as needed.

    The noise you're hearing may, if you're lucky, be a shot clutch that isn't engaging properly, or it could be the compressor itself, which would be bad. Honestly, I suspect the compressor is shot/seized. That would explain the squealing noise and the burning smell, which are coming from the belt slipping on the AC pulley since it won't turn. A bad clutch shouldn't do that.

    Def coming from the ac comp. and the deep squeak sounds like when a 18 wheeler brakes. When it is supposed to engage the middle seems to look loose and wobbly from hat I can see from above.

    I was going to take the 10 amp out the other night but didn't know if it'd effect anything else. Currently it's out.

    You guys still think its the whole compressor?

Full LED conversion interior and exterior. Relentless Fabrication front and rear bumpers. 4X4innovation sliders. BAMF bed rack. CVT rooftop tent.
    It does sound like it could be a compressor. If you need to wait to get it check out and/or repaired, you can do as mentioned and disconnect the clutch coil, or just don't select defrost or AC. The only issue with disconnecting the coil while waiting for repair is if you have a fogged up windshield. While blowing air out the defroster vents will help, if the humidity is high you will still have a difficult time clearing off a fogged windshield, so just be aware of this until you get it repaired. The burnt smell is probably the belt slipping on the clutch pulley. I would recommend getting it looked at and repaired before winter so your defroster will be at 100%.
