Who Has Bought a 2011 or 2012 4x4 Double Cab V6 Manual in California?

I have a thread about 5-Speed Auto Vs. 6-Speed Manual here. Thanks to that thread, I decided to start this one to focus on California Tacoma owners...

According to my local dealer in San Diego, I can't buy a 2011 or 2012 V6 Double Cab TRD Tacoma with a 6-Speed manual in California due to emissions standards. Access cab yes, but Double Cab no.

I you go to the "build your tacoma" page on the Toyota site and punch in a California zip code, the site won't give you the option to select a 6-Speed manual tranny for a V6 Double Cab. Bit of confirmation I guess.

Nevertheless, I've heard of some people actually buying one in California after all!

So here are some questions to get this discussion started:

Have you bought a 2011 or 2012 6-Speed Manual Double Cab in California?

    If so, how? Where?

Have you bought one out of state maybe and quickly registered it in CA?

    Discuss...

Like I said in the other thread, I found 3 silver ones (2011 TRD off road double cab 4x4) At John Elway Toyota in Ontario, CA (Inland Empire). They would not deal with me at all so I walked. But you might have better luck. I remember them specifically because it was odd that they had 3 of the exact same truck on the lot.

The dealerships main goal is to get you into a car on the spot. They are all known to lie to make that happen. Don't believe what they say.

Update: I spoke with Toyota directly. It turns out, as other has pointed out, that the dealer was screwing with me. They do sell them in Cali, and there is no emissions problems.

You just have to special order them half the time, because of the low productions numbers of them shipped to CA.

I know my year isn't what you're looking for but my situation was similar. I bought a new 2010 sr5 double cab short bed 4x4 6 speed manual in Aug. of last year. When I went on the Toyota website it wouldnt let me select 6 speed manual for double cab. The dealership said they were hard to come by but they had ONE on the lot. Other dealerships said they didnt make them but they were obviously wrong.

Thanks for the info Marty. How are you liking that 6-Speed? And how's you MPG.

I prefer manuals, but I'll admit, the comments on the 6-speed on this site got me a bit scared.

I went and test drove an access cab 6-speed. I admit, I wasn't impressed. Seems like the auto is better. But, I might be biased and brainwashed from all the comments about the 6-speed I've read on TW.

The problem is, a test drive is simply not enough to really get to know a car.

It'll be another month before I buy, so I still have time to research.

I am having a hard time finding a 6spd MT as well. A few weeks ago I had one sales guy tell me that Toyota is phasing them out because manual transmissions are not reliable (yes, he was full of it). A different dealer had a ton of Tacomas on the lot - none were manuals. They tried to find one for me in CA and a few other states but no luck. It is starting to look like the only way to get one out here is to have Toyota build it.

I got my 2012 dcsb 4x4 trd offroad package with a 6 spd transmission from Modesto Toyota back in May. I paid $30036 plus tax license and fees. So it came total out the door around $32500. Don't talk to salesman or sales manager, talk to fleet manager. Want to add, it took 2 weeks for Toyota to accept order and 6 weeks to build.

I have one, I bought it at Escondido Toyota. That dealership is horrible, but the truck is great. Bought it Sept '11.
