I know when I was in my early teens, my SR5 22R 5 spd could do anything. But that was because I had nothing else better to do the job. I would not expect our trucks today to haul more then 4 to 5K regardless of engine or tow package set up. If I had more weight then that, I would get a 1/2 ton or so. If your running a 2.7L 5 spd, I would not run more then 3500 lbs just because it will be working hard at that level. The 4 cyl prerunner truck has the same suspension and tow hitch options, plus the rear diff is the same as the 1st gen Tundra V-8's, but the tranny and clutch will be challanged over the weight limit IMO. But occasionally, you would be surprised how much the 2.7L will tow...

 

i pulled a 52 inch toro mower on a small trailer. i4 automatic. 2012. it pulls it just fine. im really babying the truck right now through i try to stay less than 1/4 throttle. i only have 400 miles so far. great little truck..... anybody know if its ok to put it over into 3rd when i need alittle more rpm? i did it a few times to get me back up to speed. i have a lifetime warranty so im not to worried.

 

lol i pulled a 4door long bed F350 turbo desiel with 8in lift out after he dug him self to his rear diff. the road was wet deep dirt/rocky on a grade. i just put it in 4lo and kept rpm's @3500 and i pulled him out and up grade with ease. i always thought my 4banger was underpowered to tow others out but, with 4lo gearing these trucks are unstoppable torque monsters!!!!

 

just to let you know, yes it can be done in short bursts, but would you gander flat towing that same truck for 200 or even 20 miles?? that truck alone probably approaches 10k lbs.
as for my 2 cent in this thread, A proper setup would be required IMO just to two close to the weight limit on this truck as it is a small truck... now my Jeep liberty was rated to tow 5k lbs and honestly my 1k trailer with my 500# fourwheeler on it scared the shit outta me due to the short wheelbase that has, but the tow limit is there so people don't do dumb shit, but there are people who ignore all sense of safety and will still do dumb shit... to them I say, keep the fuck away from me, good luck and Darwinism is a bitch! albeit, I will be venturing to tow right at 3500 maybe a lil more with my fat ass in the truck (yes how much you have loaded in your truck negatively affects how much you can tow genius) but I will have air bags, trailer brakes, weight dist. hitch, and a open mind to stop when i need to or pull off the road if weather gets bad... all in all, just listen to what the man. says about how much a truck can tow, if you want to tow more, quit being cheap and get a larger truck.

If what you say is true, then why would Toyota, in their right mind, rate the same truck (with the only difference of note being V6 power) as being able to tow 6500lbs?

well because there is more differing from the two models, namely transmission, but also a diff. alternator, and transmission cooler. the transmission cooler being more necessary in the auto, but the different transmissions are the biggest reason, and power to get something moving safely and power to get something moving are two different things. plus the extra strain on this lil four cyinder will kill it very quickly

I call BS on that one. Have any facts to back that statement up? The 2.7L is one stout little mill.

A manual transmission doesn't need a cooler.

I ran a few acceleration tests on the weekend, and If I go by the SAE standard, I fell one second short on the 0-30, one second short on the 0-60 (If my truck was a dually, I'd have been ok). The 40-60 time was 4 seconds quicker that the standard demands. I held 50mph on a 2 mile long 6% grade. No lights or buzzers, nor any leaking fluids--scangauge coolant temps held at 199.4f. This is with a 200lbs passenger, and AC full blast, no recirc, as per the standard. I also went easy on clutch engagement, because changing the clutch is a dirty job that I'd have to do, as it's not warranty. I did the 20mph stop in 67 feet with no trailer brakes, 13 feet shorter than the standard demands.

I didn't do skidpad testing, as I'm not equipped to, but I can tell you that I have 5 spring leafs in the back, which is two more than a comparative stock TRD w/towing package, fwiw.

I don't know exactly how much the trailer weighs, but it's a fair bit over 3500lbs.

If the speed of getting things moving has anything to do with safety, my truck and trailer, along with any loaded tractor trailer (which I'm fully licensed to operate, btw) will have to be taken off the road, as I can out-accelerate and out brake any 80,000lbs rig...

 

I pulled a 21 foot sailboat from Wilton Connecticut to Oklahoma City. Granted we did slow down for some of those looooong hills in the Virginias and Missouri, but the Tacoma amazed me none the less. This from a 1997 2.7 5speed with 230,000 on the ticker. Used 1/2 quart of oil.

I have owned a 2.4 fuel injected 1986 one ton that I think had a towing capacity of 5000 pounds. It had the stiffest suspension of any vehicle I have ever ridden in. I pulled a fireplace trailer half a dozen times that probably taxed that weight limit but most of the time I pulled a 2500 pound Ranger boat around.

I drove it 240k miles and in 1999 it blew a head gasket mostly because I replaced the radiator with an aftermarket piece that did not have the cooling capacity the truck needed.
My trips were from 10 to 600 miles since I fished BASS part time. I replaced the clutch once and other than normal maintenance it was a beast of a vehicle.

I replaced it with a 2000 Dodge diesel which I still drive today. I joined the forum because I am contemplating buying a 2.7 5 speed to pull my boat. I am almost 60 and don't drive the distances I used to. The boat is a light weight high speed bass boat which weighs under 2500 pounds.


Sorry for the long post. I'm looking for a 2.7 Access or 4 door with a 5 speed.
