Fitting 35" tires on these little trucks is a bit more involved than on the more recent generations, so I thought it would be helpful to have a dedicated hub for information on the topic. The 1st gen general thread is so busy everything gets lost in the mix. Also, I hate to ask the same questions in every single build thread as I start the :sawzall:process.

I'll edit this OP into an informative list of basic requirements. Let me know what I need to add. Please share your experiences, fails, wins, specs, pictures. Tag anyone I miss. I think we can make this a really good resource.

    What's required?

    Firewall tubbing

    Re-gearing the differentials

    Fender Trimming

    Wheel backspace

    Awesome write-up

Saved for badass pics. Tell me which pic of your rig you want featured, and I'll post it here along with photo credits if needed.

    A few questions I have...

What gauge steel is everyone using for their tubs?

What Backspace is required to keep a 35/12.5 off the frame? (think Monte said sub-3")

How much did everyone cut out of their fenders front and rear?

Ha this is a good idea.

I used 20 Ga. For me 2.5" kept me off the frame, but the jury is still out on 2.75 which i want to try. And for the fenders, I need to look at my build later today.

Couldn’t tell you what gauge steel was used, as it was scrap to patch the tub.

    I ran 3.5 bs wheels w/ 1.25 spacers
    - 2.25” bs overall. I was also running 315/75r16, not a true 35.

Believe I cut 2.5” off the front fenders, just below the flare holes, and a similar amount in the rear, if not a little more. Cut numbers should be in my build thread, so don’t quote me here. I also ditched the flares because I hate them on Tacoma’s.

Only pic I have of this truck during the process
    • 35/12.50R16 Maxxis Trepadors
    • Used 18 Ga. steel to patch hole
    • 4 Inch BS Wheels
    • 1.25" Spacer
    • Took 1.5 inches off of the front fender all the way around.
    Thanks
    Jeff

Thanks for all the good info, as usual, Monte.

You clear the frame completely? My current wheels are 4.0BS. I want as little of a spacer as possible. Hoping a 1.25 will do it.

Subbing for some good info. I’ve got trimmed and tubbed fenders to clear my 35’s, and ended up having to run a snorkel cause the rain coming off the tires got in the air box and the truck wouldn’t run:/. Anyone else run into this?

I cycled it with no coilover in at full bump and went lock to lock and it never touched the frame, I did have to lose a bunch of metal on both the body mounts though.

I never have. Though my fender tube is mostly plugged with mud and I have the deck plate mod done from years before.

Yeah. I went to the 1st gen sub section and searched 35s.

    Clicked search this forum only.

    Display results as threads.

But I also knew the thread existed.

Also, running 4.5” BS, I think. 35x10.50’s rub frame at full lock but not to badly.
