Hobie Fishing Edition

Cut the legs down on a Teton cot. I choose this one because of the length, most are too long to fit in a 6' bed. I also really like the width of this one, it's proven to be super comfortable.

 

How have the quick fist's been holding up on your tank in the bed? Do you see or feel the water sloshing around? Does the pipe move? I am trying to decide to either make one for inside my bed or put one on my roof rack. I was thinking of going 4 inch pvc at 5 feet long would give about 3 gallons of water on the rack, but considering going 6 inch pipe and a 3 feet long in the bed.

 

Concerning the quickfists, so far so good. I think they are rated for like 50 lbs each, and 8 gallons of water plus the weight of the tank is less than 100 lbs total. I'm definitely going to keep an eye on them long term though and watch for cracks or any sign of old age that will weaken them.

I generally either have my tanks completely full, or completely empty, so sloshing isn't an issue. If you're going with smaller dia pipe like 4", I can't imagine it being a problem. One thing I did that may not be documented, is I added a rubber strip to the underside of the bedside tank, that protects both the tank and wheel well. My tank actually rests on the wheel well, which reduces stress on the quickfists.

I don't know how you plan to pressurize, but at 30 psi I get a really nice blast of water. That 8 gallons goes quick (about 5 mins), so consider that when sizing your tank or spray nozzles. The shower nozzle for the roof rack tank is a super low-flow showerhead, and I'm guessing at 30 psi I probably have around 6-7 mins.

Thanks for the update about the quick fists and about it resting on the wheel well. If I go with the 6 inch in the bed, I'll probably get a low flow 1 gpa pump (like folks use for atv sprayers) and use that. If I go the roof rack I'll just leave it gravity flow, maybe put a tire valve on it for a hand pump or hooking into a portable compressor. Not sure which way I want to go yet, money is defiantly a factor though

 

A water pump is going to be you're best option price wise, and exactly the route I would have gone if I didn't have OBA. Consider a pressure relief valve, or remove the fill cap, when your pumping, otherwise it will create a vacuum. Same goes if using it with gravity. If I open the valves on either tank with the fill cap tight, water barely trickles out.

I have a old town predator mx I fish with, hopefully upgrading to the pdl version or going for a hobie in the next year(ish). It's tough trying to fish a certain spot and constantly paddling/fishing, especially in a current or keeping up with a bait ball.

 

Hell yea, peddle power is definitely a major upgrade if you're fishing. I used an old Dagger sit-on-top from maybe 2001 till I bought my Hobie new in 2015. That boat has some serious mojo encrusted on it, and I still love paddling it occasionally. There are so many great options out there now, nothing like even 5 years ago. The Hobie Compass seems like a fantastic boat for the money. Tight lines!

 

Caught my first snakehead today. This one is 35" and about 15 lbs. I landed 2 others over 30" and 3 mid-20s today, plus a handful of nice bass, and lost about the same. These things are a blast to catch! Super aggressive close to the boat and they throw hooks regularly.

 

What do you all do with the snakeheads?

 

Eat um, or give them away to eat. I’ve got Asian neighbors on both sides of me, they won’t go to waste, haha.

Giving the Bixpy a try on my Outback. I always made fun of the guys with Torqeedos, now I'm just a hypocrite. During the initial test run (with a full load of gear) I basically got a 1 mph boost at all speeds while using the Mirage Drive, and the motor by itself pushed me 3.5 mph at 1/2 throttle and 4.5 mph at full. Realistic top speed with the motor and Mirage Drive was 5.5 mph, but 4.5-5 mph seemed to be the sweet spot. After 4 hours on the water and a total distance of 8 miles for the day I still had 4/5 left on the battery meter! I did not use the motor while fishing, but the bulk of my travel between spots it was running at various speeds. This unit costs $1099 for the universal setup and included everything you see here plus the steering system which I did not install. I opted to lock the steering forward since I'm keeping the sailing rudder functional. They also offer a rudder mount or Mirage Drive mount for those interested.

 

Not to steer you one way or another, but the thought of losing the mirage drive was never an option for me. The motor is good to get me where I want to go, but the mirage drive is for fishing.

No stripers recently, getting way too hot. I fish for those early Spring and Fall when the bite is better. Summer is snakehead and shooting season at my house.

 

How the heck you building a LiFePO battery for that low cost? I have a 20aH lithium that powers my fish finder, livewell, and lights, and I think it was over $200 by itself.

I'd like to have a 100ah deep cycle for camping trips and home emergencies. Considering that's a $850 battery, that ain't gonna happen. I love making stuff, but electronics and batteries are not my forte.
