I'm wiring up my accessories with the CH4X4 Toyota OEM small push button switches. 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro, if it matters.

So I'm trying to follow the advice on this thread:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/help-identifying-illumination-wire-on-cargo-light-switch.458634/

Below is the way I have interpreted that thread, and the way it's currently wired. Although the relay functions as expected (switch is pushed in, light bar goes on), the switch illumination does not (switch illuminated when lights off, not illuminated with lights on).

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Switch shares the ground for the internal LED's. It doesn't allow for dimming. So remove the TAN wire and go to ground directly with the Black wire from the switch...

    Caribe,

I was *thinking* this is what I should do, but I wanted verification. I have everything all soldered-up nicely and heat-shrunk, so I didn't want to re-do it, then re-do it again. Thanks!

Does this switch also allow for indication that it's "ON"? I.e., lights up brighter or another part when depressed? I think I know the answer but again want to confirm.

One LED for ON...the other tied to dash illumination but no dimming

So the way I'm showing it wired, but moving switch black to ground, will this run both LEDs correctly?

My understanding was he was following that thread because he WANTED it to dim with the factory lighting.

OP did it dim at all? My understanding of what you wrote was it did not do the backlighting for on vs off.

@caribe makaira Was this never figured out? Thought @fergyz figured it out?

oops.. stumbled into 3rd gen again.. lol. set up may be different, but should still work.

I used a mini fuse tap, and just plugged the tap into the tail lights slot, wire carries on to switch. My switch comes on with the headlights/tail lights. It's pretty easy as the tail light fuse is right behind the little fold down drawer cubby on the left side of the column. 10 amp fuse, 3rd from the left on top row if I recall. back of the drawer cubby will have a diagram to confirm. Once it's plugged in, the fuse tap has 2 fuses, 1 for the TL's and 1 for the switch. End result, my switch lights up anytime the headlights are on, so I figured that's mission accomplished. It's an easy, and just as easily reversible, method.

The internals of the $1.00 switch shares the ground of both LED's. They are not independent LED's

Got it... guess the thread just died. Thought he worked out the illum aspect but just not the on off with the light.

OP, your drawing on the relay is also incorrect...but it must be wired correctly, since it works:burp:

Caribe - Your correction to my wiring diagram makes sense. Not sure why CH4X4 doesn't put out a wiring diagram. I moved the black to ground, and right now, the switch labels (left LED in your sketch) work as expected (on when lights on, off when lights off). Switch icons (right LED in your sketch) are always on. I suspect I've go my GREEN and RED1 reversed. I'll check it again when I have more light (and energy).

Also, if that's a "shit switch", what other switch would you recommend? I've already got a sunk cost with the switches, but I may get a hankering to do it better later.

Finally, to your last post - D'oh! I went too quick when sketching, and I know better. It's actually wired as you show (87 to light bar).

    Thanks much for your expertise!

For the acc and illum power, you can daisy chain the switches.

You have any good links to refer to when someone’s not able to answer?

I threw up some links. There is probably more info then you need but they should give you a good grasp. I know a lot of basics but these helped me figure out more about gen3 specifics.
