I don't doubt that the second gens are reliable trucks, but it seems that everytime I log on there's one more thread about front diff issues, rear spring TSBs, oil distribution issues on the 1-GRFE, etc, etc. If i were to buy a new truck I'd still probably get a tacoma. If I were to buy used....well thats a whole different story :)

They are both good. Have owned my 06 since new, and now at almost 78K, no issues, just oil and gas. Have also met others who have well over 100K on their pickups (2005+) and no issues there either.

I do like the 1st gens, but finding one new or with less than 20K on it is pretty hard. They both have their ups and downs, ones bigger more comfortable, with more power, and gets somewhat better MPG. But bigger makes it less capable off road. And has more plastic parts.
One is smaller and not as roomy but proven tough.....but they no longer make them and most likely never will.

This argument can go on and on, but in the end, Toyota now makes bigger more comfortable trucks that have not been given the time to prove themselves....I know that mine will easily reach 200K. Who knows what the next gens will be like, but I'm sure they will get flamed by everyone until you just accept them, or buy another brand.

Nothing is built like it used to be.....

Have 153,00 miles on my 2nd gen and no complaints. Only things that I've replaced is a battery and my u joints because I was young and stupid and drove through mud alot and never washed it and the prerunners don't have zerks for greasing. But my replacements do.

Bad thing is most 1st gens are gone by the wayside. Can count 40 to 1 2nd gen vs 1st gen here. Most were bought back by Toyota and crushed.

Driving through mud won't. But driving through a nasty muddy/clay pit that is at the bottom of my moms driveway year round atleast 5 of 7 days a week just for fun and not washing it or the underside but every month or more. It itself may not be the cause. I did have around 90,000 and may have just needed to be changed. But I'm convinced that it didn't help
    I miss that mud pit

My gut feeling concurs that they don't make 'em like they used to. But, according to the latest JD Powers survey of 3-year-old vehicles:

And the Tacoma comes out best in its category.

    FWIW.

I'm a 100% Toyota man. Just bought 2011 mag grey TRD off road last sept. I love it. I gave my 1997 Tacoma single cab 2.4 to my son. 330,000 miles. Never crack the motor. All original except radiator and batteries naturally & ac compressor. I pulled a 21Foot high/low camper around for 3 years usually 400 to 500 miles at a time. I didn't change the original clutch until 252k miles. Ac compress at 292k miles. It still runs great. That's hard to beat. I think 1at gen will out do 2nd gen only because the 2nd gen has so much more eletrical crap. But with that said, 2nd gen will outlast F-150 and the others. That's just the history of Toyota tacomas.

Not around here! I see a lot more 1st than 2nd. I still see 2nd, but it is like 1 in 20. I guess we just take better care of our trucks around here.. lol :D

At least I know personally it isn't a money issue. I have 120K on mine and it still looks new, minus a few scratches and bumper dents (yay parking lots... I hate other people!). Of course I traded comfortable ride for better lookin tires, but still handles great. Haven't had to replace anything and I'm the only owner it has ever had. Even have the same battery it came with!

Ok, I take that back... I have had to replace light bulbs and oil filters lol

2nd Gen better...feels more solid. Doors were paper thin on my earlier one. Mechanically they are equal IMO. 2nd Gen quieter and rides better,

I prefer what I have over what I had

Yeah all the Second Gens suck... oh wait, how many threads do the 1st gen guys have about the frame rusting out from beneath them. Just sayin'. I think both are good, pros and cons all weighted I think they are about equal.
