I've got 2011 with the 2.7L. I'm shopping for a new muffler. I decided not to go with a full cat-back because the stock pipes are already stainless steel and a good diameter.

    The dilemna is this:
    Flowmaster 50 or 60 Series
    Magnaflow

or one of the above with a DT header

From your guys experience, what is the best choice for the least drone and least rice?

    Kevin,

Go to YouTube and look up the configurations you want to compare. I think that you'll find everything sounds like 'noise'. There are other options available to you as well, many from California manufacturers. Smaller names, but might have the 'sound' you are looking for.

    Good luck!

You see, I have done that for many hours but the majority of the exahust videos only feature trucks revving in neutral. That noise is different from normal everyday driving. I want to buy a muffler that doesn't drone. The exhaust won't drone if the truck is revving in neutral.

That's why I asked if anybody has any experience.

I'm with you Kevin. I was shopping for a new exhaust for a Ranger I had. It was 12 yrs old and hanging on by a thread. I found very few YouTube videos that gave you cabin sound when driving, when under load, and of course when you did, you had nothing to compare it to.

Finding a 'reasonable' solution is a difficult task I suppose. That said, the stock exhaust on my S2000 has a reasonable sound; tuned by the manufacturer. Aftermarket exhausts are louder, and for me, too obnoxious. But I'm older, so I might be more cynical.

Here's my opinion for what its worth and I state this after researching endlessly for my Ranger not too long ago. Most of the name brand exhaust system/muffler manufacturers create 'loud' solutions. I wonder if they really spent any time trying to tune an exhaust sytem that delivered better venting of gas while not creating 'fart cannons' and noise makers. That's too bad in my opinion. Given what I said about my S2000, decent sounding and performing exhaust systems can be created. But in the case of most the aftermarket solutions I reviewed, quick solutions that offer loud drones is what you'll get; mass produced noise.

My Ranger was a 4 cylinder. I wanted to get better MPGs and perhaps, better power (minor improvement albeit). But I didn't want to wake the neighbors and sound like a teenager again. I wanted the compromise that was elusive. While we 4 cylinder owners want better power, at the expense of noise, it isn't worth it for me. And, without a tuned exhaust, getting the aftermarket solution could rob you of both MPGs and power. Not what folks were aiming for...but there's no laws that keep manufacturers from making wild, unsupported claims.

    Good luck!!

Hmmm... I already read that thread. Everybody just seemed to want noise over everything.

From what I've read, everybody who goes with Flowmaster either gets the 40 or 50 series which are for bigger displacement engines according to the Flowmaster website. The only muffler designed with 4 and 6 cylinder engines is the 60 series, but I've yet to find someone on the forum with one.

I spoke to the owner of The Truck Shop here is SD and he said that the 40 and 50 series produce drone and won't sound good with a 4 cylinder. He recommended the 60 series. He also made it seem like the DT header was a waste of money.

    Can anybody clear things up?

    Haha

Aren't Wicked Flow mufflers a straight through design? I'm looking for something that's baffled that won't drone.

Does anybody have experience with Magnaflow's durability/quality?

    No drone homie.

Top notch quality muffler. Great customer service. Bear River Converters is a vendor here and you may get a discount.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/performance-tuning/85980-wicked-flow-exhaust.html

    On the first page:
"We Tacoma owners have a hard time making our V6 have a nice throaty and deep sound w/o having a drone, and w/o having it sound raspy and/or ricey. There's one video floating out there of a Tacoma with only a Wicked Flow muffler on it (no headers, resonators apparently still there, and only a CAI noted), and it sounds awesome. Do you have any recommendations as to which of your mufflers would sound best for the 4.0L v6? The guy in the video said it's a 3" inlet muffler, but our stock piping is 2.25" and no one I know goes over 2.5" for inlet/outlet sizes. I know this is all subjective, but I wanted to contact you in case you guys are familiar with our particular engine and which of your mufflers work best with it. Thanks!"

    Lorin Millsap's response:
"I cannot say I am familiar with the engine in your trucks, but I am familiar with the situation you are talking about. The drone of most of these mufflers comes from the simple fact that they are not designed to be effective at absorbing sound. When I say they and these, I am reffering to the major brand names, Borla, Corsa, TRD,
Magnaflow, Flowmaster. These mufflers have little sound absorbing materials, or they have other design features to make the muffler louder, and this creates the drone.

The WickedFlows are different. They may seem like they are built the same way as the others (straight through perforated tube), but the similarities end there. They use much higher quality steel, where the metal itself cancels out some of the noise, and the packing material is designed to hold up under even the most stressful conditions. We do not use rockwool as a packing because its fine fibers break down over time. Basically, when our muffler was designed, we asked what was the harshest conditions these could encounter and will it hold up to that.

My personal vehicle is a 1994 Ford Aerostar 4.0L. Here you have a meaty sounding V6, in a van that has a larger interior that would tend to resonate. I know from experience that these vans have a terrible drone with Flowmaster 50 series and Magnaflow. I run our 18" WickedFlow with 2.25" pipe and it has no drone at all. It can still produce all the sound I need when I want it to, but at cruise the system goes quiet.

I've been researching for the past hour and I am liking Wicked Flow. I am 95% sure I will be getting a DT header along with a Wicked Flow.

I think the 13" WF would be too loud with a DT header. I think I'm going to end up getting the 18". What do you think?

And just to be clear, my truck should have a 2.25" stock pipe diameter size right?

Even the 13" I have isin't really "loud" until you step on it. I've not ventured into header land, but it should pretty good.

It has a great rumble most of the time.

and yes, you have 2.25" stock piping.

I have the magnaflow 14" and I love it. Slight rumble at startup, then quiet as stock at idle (almost). Even while cruising at 80mph you can't really hear it at all. Only when you step on it or even take off from a stop light you will get results. Its exactly what I wanted. Great sound, not too excessive and falshy, and no interior drone or rumble or anything unless punching it or windows down. Had it for 3 years now and its looks like new still and sounds just as good.

Only problem is in have a 4.0L so I can't tell you what it would be like for you except most likely even less than what I hear.

Well what is the "difference" you are referring to?

    Power? Sound? Flow?

Alright, I just ordered an 18" 2.25 diameter Wicked Flow Max muffler from Bear River Converters. I used their discount code which was sweeet:D

Their website checkout thing wasn't working though so I had to use Paypal...

I'm going to have it welded in for $120. Is that a good price?

Thats not horrible. Maybe see if you can't get a tech to do it "on the side" for cash. Might run you a tad less.

Hope ya' like it man. You can really control the sound. Great low rumble cruising, mean as shit gassin' it to get on the highway.

no power increase and if you have an aftermarket muffler it doesnt make much noise difference
