Woe is me. Been an expensive summer with other stuff, now the truck.

    2003 Tacoma 3.4 5 speed

Driving to work this morning I was driving like crap. Figured it was me and my clutch work. Then I realized as I pulled away from a stop light that the clutch was engaging fully and immediately as soon as the clutch pedal moved from the floor.

Then I stalled the damn thing. While it was dead I couldn't move the gear shift. And, with it in first gear and the clutch pedal on the floor, it started rolling as I cranked it back up.

That tells me that my clutch is not fully disengaging.

I've got an idea, but I don't want to poison the well with my thoughts. So, what do y'all think is wrong?

    Thanks,

    Matt

Thanks guys. I've looked at the cost of master and slave cylinders on rock auto. They aren't too bad.

How difficult is the job replacing them?

What is the hydraulic fluid that it uses?

Very easy to replace both. The adage, "if I can do it, anyone can" rings true for these jobs.

I just used DOT-3 brake fluid.

Just to try something before I buy parts, I am trying to adjust the clutch push rod. Unsuccessfully.

I've got the lock nut (12mm) loosened. The service manual then says, "turn the push rod until the free- play and push rod play are correct". I can't turn that damn rod. There's a square nut on there (14mm). It may or may not be affixed to the rod, but I can't turn it. The whole assembly torques and I'm afraid I'll break it.

    What am I doing wrong?

I've got to unhook it from the pedal, don't I?

can you pop a picture ?
Everything under the dash should be adjustable .
Sounds like you may be a little late for an adjustment but it wont hurt to try .

I'll try go get a picture up tomorrow. I've just bought spare parts, so I'm going to start working on it in the morning.

Is there a way to tell which cylinder is bad?

I don't know if this is of any diagnostic value, but I can see the slave extend the rod when the pedal is pushed. I would have expected it to slowly creep back in while the pedal is held down if there was a leak in one of the cylinders, but I don't see anything like that.

    Thats a great point !!!
Considering his truck is an 03 , he has to look at all the issues before spending the green backs . Gotta figure he has a lot of mileage .
    Nevertheless , great point

I don't know what that means. Can someone expand?

And, it does have a lot of miles. About 220k.

Pull your shifter boot off and remove your shifter, on the bottom there is a bushing that could have worn down.

I changed the master cylinder this morning. The clutch feels and drives much better. At least around the block. I'll give it a couple of days before I declare it fully in remission.

    Thanks, all.

I've replaced the leaky master and it drives great. I've also replaced the slave just because it was cheap and I expect it would have been the next to go.

New problem, though, and I wonder if it may be this bushing.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to shift into first gear. The scenario goes like this: I'm driving down the road listening to the radio and a traffic light turns red. I stop. Shift into neutral and take my foot off the clutch. When the light turns green I push on the clutch and . . . have to really push to get it into first. After I get it into first if I leave my foot on the clutch I can slide it in and out of first pretty easy. If I put it back in neutral and release the clutch it becomes difficult to get into first again.

Possibly unrelated, there is a slight hitch going into second while I'm driving. Just a slight one, but I think maybe it's getting worse, too. Going into third, fourth, and fifth are fine.

    Thanks

Here is the part number to replace the shifter bushing for the 6speed .Not sure about the 5speed
    Toyota Part no. 33548-60040

Read through these posts , Some of them deal with the 6 speed but I beleive the shifter bushing is the same as the 5spd.
There are all kinds of pictures to help you figure out if your shifter bushing is finished . Your problem is NOT usually offiliated with a shifter problem but I see it posted so often and has helped out other members . It wouldnt hurt to pop the shifter off to check for the few minutes it takes to inspect the bushing .

Had you said it was difficult to select reverse as well as first , we would still be looking at bleeding the hydraulics or a possible new clutch . The bushing is cheap and a quick fix in comparison to a new clutch.

Edit : have you checked/changed your trans fluid ?

After I changed out my master and slave cylinders I noticed something similar.

My guess is now that the hydraulics are brand new, and acting like such, I feel more of the mechanical wear that I never used to. This is just a theory so others, who are much more smarter than me, can feel free to chime in on that.

I ended up changing out the trans fluid to MT-90. Made a decent difference but I still feel the "hard to get into first from neutral at a dead stop" shift once in a while.

As for the socket and shifter bushings, you can get them from Marlin for fairly cheap.

    https://www.marlincrawler.com/transmission/shifter-parts/heavy-duty-sockets

I changed mine because I wanted to get rid of the "sloppy dancing" in the gear shifter when cruising in 5th gear. It made no difference for me.
