hahaha...nah...dry balls were the main culprit...my lower balls are on their way out to make things worse

combination of some drying bushings on the lowers...my suspension was hating life in the desert

the thousands of miles of CO/UT/NM/AZ dusty backcountry finally caught up to them

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll go do some investigating if I can ever get away from this desk.

Sorry for the hijack, Bob. I was kinda hoping you'd say "that ECGS bushing or whatever I was talking about in Moab makes some noises sometimes and it's normal" so I could go back to sleeping well at night.

Again all my work at SBO Fab is totally warranted so if you discover any issues with our install feel free to just swing on by so I can fix it... ;)

This is a great build and well put together thread!
    Subbed for shenanigans...

I feel you on the dirty balls, my TC lowers dry up quick out here when it gets over 105. I keep a bottle of triflow in the cab.

shouldn't be the bushings...doesn't sound like a diff issue...but i'm no expert and i'm not there, so we're just armchair quarterbacking it

10-4. Going to spend some time with it tonight and see if I can figure it out.
Best shop ever. For everything that doesn't have a torque spec, anyway.

had a busy weekend with the trucks getting ready to head south for FJ Summit...

friday night i tackled my failed winch on the tacoma...was on hagerman and lost my "in" but still had the "out"...swapped the wires on the winch to make the "out" the "in" for a temporary fix until i got new solenoids...so i ripped apart the box and got 4 new solenoids in from Warn.

    rotten mess before...

had to get destructive to get some wires off for the new solenoids..seized nuts

    my work table...aka kitchen counter

much better...ready to go back in...

and now i have a working winch again :woot:

    onto saturday's projects

kayla did her first oil change by herself

gutted the engine bay wiring for the auxiliary fuse box and second battery and put in 1/0 and a new 12 slot blue sea with 100A breaker...way more organized and cleaner looking now...

the mess before...this was all behind the secondary batter...very inconvenient
    F6228BB2-A690-4A37-A5F9-5BECEF2BD047_zps_5b473512bb3684933f4822d848795a031c3f5bb8.jpg

new placement...much more convenient to access the accessesories...100A breaker and dual battery monitor/solenoid is behind the battery
    0636165A-74A4-4108-844F-AF408051DAB4_zps_7e20f48a45d37ad13aac0f108e9e1ceca0b294c7.jpg

and completed...i will eventually loom the wires on the passenger side and along the firewall..

while i was ripping apart the wiring, we also took out the corner lights to get the water out of them....so for most of the day, the truck was in rough shape
    d024de68-5499-4e07-8149-364266131900_zps_f82cafb281ad5c13724754bb1dc642d5ad8488c0.jpg

^you can also see the new mirrors we put on...swapped out the white mirrors to black trail teams

sunday's projects were with the tacoma...

my 4wd went again and we diagnosed it to the ADD...so i picked up a new one and tossed her in sunday morning...

job really isn't too bad...loosen up the front diff mounting bolts so the diff can pivot giving you more room to access the upper left bolt and makes taking out/putting in the ADD much easier...4 bolts on the ADD...little hammer tap to break the seal...clean the surface...fipg the surface and reinstall..lost about 1/2 L of gear oil during the install, so i topped off the diff fluids after...

found out the main issue as soon as i took the old ADD out...water pouring out of the breather nipple

so this time around i put a small zip tie around the breather hose on that connection...

also took the front suspension apart a bit to access the lower uniballs for inspection/repairs...

driver side was dirty as fuck, but still tight, so i just cleaned the shit outta it and put back together...

passenger side had the guts coming out of the uniball (some sort of teflon fabric maybe?) which led to a lot of play in the uniball...lots of up and down movement

so i swapped out the uniball on the passenger side...used the TC uniball kit along with a ball joint press kit...

tip on the reinstall...use a ratchet for a slow press...if it gets crooked, swap the kit around to press it back out, but go slow with a ratchet..it will pop itself straight before coming out completely...then switch back around to continue pressing it in...

we still have some small things to do to the FJ before heading down Thursday morning, but some big projects were knocked out..

Kind of always wondered about the front diff and t-case breathers considering the fact that the rear diff needs modifying.

Do you think it would be prudent to check the breathers up front and seal/modify them in any way?

Do you think this was the root cause of your ADD failure?

the amount of water that came out of the ADD makes me pretty damn sure that was the cause...

whether it was not a good seal around the breather nipple, or if i have a leak in the breather network above is uncertain...

i wish there was more room around the front diff to access the breather hoses easier..basically have to drop the diff to access the breather hoses up there..fucking tight!

i think the front breather already goes into the engine bay though...
