I've done a mod or two
I have a mighty 4cyl, it certainly isn't a powerhouse. That said, because most offroading is slow you should have no issue, just re-gear it to give it a hand on the highways. I am slowly going that route. Here is a picture with my lift, minus the new lights and bumper paint I just finished doing.

I'll go grab a couple of current images when the rain here lets up.

The 4 cylinders are plenty. The problem is the gearing. They are geared for top end, better gas mileage. I know a regear is in my future. Just putting it off until I do a few more mods to warrant it. It is expensive.

My 2.7 has been on a few expeditions over the years, changed mods multiple times and more recently to accommodate long term trips on a self sufficient base. 170k and like most everyone, a re-gear is also in the plan.

No pics but expo is the route I'm taking my 2.7 build. First I need to find donor parts for a 5 speed swap. My auto started going out 2 weeks ago.

How many miles did you get out of the auto? I heard the auto wasn't to good in the 2.7 for sluggish reasons. Im looking for donor doors. Toyota should take the rusted out framed tacomas and sell them to junk yards so theres more picking opportunities. I can't find a tacoma anywhere around the junk yards here.

Got 218k out of it. The auto is gutless but the price was right. Still runs but slips bad on grades and throws a CEL. Bought a 5 speed donor a couple hours ago with a rusted through broken frame. 96' single cab 4x4 2.7 with 109k. My build progresses this weekend. Now I just need an ECU.
What unit are you with in at Campbell? I was B CO 2/502 01'-04'.

B 1/320th I like it here good wheeling up at turkey bay. Mainly just take the dirts though so I don't destroy my dd. Already did that once.

Good luck on your swap. Did you get all the interior parts to do the swap or just the tranny? Post pics of your build here too. This is my truck Im starting with. Im paying it off soon so Ill have funds to build it.

Thanks. I bought a whole truck for $700 so I have all the parts except the correct ECU. I may have to do some wiring harness splicing. I think I went to turkey bay once camping. Never went wheeling while in Campbell.

We usually camp when we go there since is 20 bucks for 3 days to ride so even if you go one day you still pay the 20 so we feel obligated to stay the weekend. And I would part that truck out and make all your money back. That would be a sweet deal you might be able to scrap it for that much. Was it running?

EDIT: im guessing it wasn't running since it didn't have an ecu with it since your looking for one?

Has an ECU but I need same year same everything as the original truck it's going into (97' xtra cab). It ran before the PO's idiot "mechanic" screwed up the fuel injection. Probably part out some of it but it's my parts truck for now. Guess i should start another post so as not to hijack this one any more.

I'm pretty sure it has the power. It's a matter of mechanical advantage. Have you seen what some of the stockish 20/22r's can do? Diff gearing and a double or triple xfer case can do a whole lot. Wouldn't go with an automatic for an expo vehicle. Ever tried to push/pull start an auto?
