Expansion valve behind rubber seal. If you don't have a Torx socket to fit, a 12 pt socket works, think a 3/8" or metric equivalent.

    Thanks Guys!!

in terms of volumes for this job, and provided from the pdf links above:

amount of refrigerant, it states that the system holds: 570 to 630 g (20.10 to 22.22 oz.)

that seems like alot of refrigerant to me? 20 ounces? as in like 20 x 1 shots of whiskey?

    am i reading that right?

amount of oil in the compressor and magnetic clutch assembly: 150 + 15cc (5.1+0.51 fl.oz)

Now this seems reasonable to me, almost 6 whiskey shots worth of oil.

But that 20.10 to 22.22 oz seems like a lot of refrigerant?

    ....wait....i just got it.....

the refrigerant is measured in weight (hence the scale that so many people use) and oil is measured in volume.

metric is so much better lol.

    so nevermind!

also there is the small amount of coolant that drained out of the rad when i unhooked it. its about 2-3 litres and i will get the pink toyota stuff to replace.

got it done. took me 12 hrs. toughest part, by far, were my compressor bolts getting them out. getting them in was much easier. i put anti seize, a very small amount, on all the bolts as mine were very corroded. got the vent temps to 42.9F. good enough!

it was my first ever ac job so i think i can do it much faster next time.

going to use my pump and manifold set to do the vette now. its an 87 and its ac is weaksauce. thanks everyone. great thread for helping on the ac job.

    Wow, very good info here!!!

Yesterday I went out to the hardware store. Everything was running fine and sudently it start to squeal like hell. I parked on the side of the road and open the hood. The squeal had stoped but it smell burned rubber. I restarted and was ok. Later It did it again for 1 minute and stoped. I also noticed that the AC light was flashing. So from what I read here it is the AC clutch or compressor.
I will do some test today with the differents settings to see if it squeal again when the AC is ON.

My Tacoma is a 2012 with 92,000km. In the summer I don't use it a lot since I use more my motorcycle. Also now I'm retired since 5 month, I use it a lot less. Is it possible it seized because it is not running often, something like once or two a week.

Hi guys, digging this one up.

I just replaced the front plate on the magnetic clutch from the link earlier to ebay. It fixed my AC problem!, however i have a slight dragging noise/metal rubbing when the ac compressor kicks on and off. I assume its due to the amount of shims.

I put all 4 shims in that came with the hub. Any suggestions ? I might try taking it off again and putting the 3 shims that were in the original one in to see what it does.

Rubbing hmm. Did you torque it to spec?
    Try the shims

Buy a feeler gauge for like 5 bucks and make sure you are between .030 and .060 (i think)

2 months ago I had a squaling (2 times) and the AC light flashing. Here at that time it was not warm, so I change the heater setting and never had anymore squealing. Only the AC light blinking. Now it start to be warmer. So I changed my AC relay, now the AC flashing is gone. But I don't have cold air when I put the AC on. When I push the AC button, nothing happens. No squealing, the engine doesn't slow down. It is like nothing start the AC clutch.

What can prevent the clutch from starting apart from the relay? The pickup sensor and/or the pressure switch? If it was the clutch itself, I will hear something when it try to engage?

Have you stared at the compressor pulley while someone hit the ac light, to see exactly what happens? If not, you should do this to see if the hub begin to spin or not.

so i am having a similar problem, at first my ac was only blowing out of the right driver side vent and warm out of the other three vents. sometimes if i was at idle all 4 would blow cold but once i started moving the three would blow warm again. today while driving my daughter to day care i heard a ticking noise and then my ac went out and the ac light started blinking. What is going on? i also have the burning smell when the ac is on.

I wrote up a issue I had on my Taco. The AC quit producing cold air and the AC Light Blinked Green. Turned out I had two issues.

    1) Bad MG/CLT Relay ($17 at auto zone or $90 at the Stealership)
    2) Bad Magnetic RPM Sensor on the Compressor. ($90 from a Toyota Dealership in Florida)

Nag. Sensor was hard to find by the way. National backorder.

When your AC Light Blinks Green you have an issue with the Compressor Speed not matching the Engine Speed in the AC Amp.

You can short the MG/CLT Relay Contact Points in the Fuse/Relay Panel in the Engine Compartment with a jumper to simulate the relay contacts closing.

Start the Taco, turn on the AC and it will/should blow cold,..but your AC Light will still blink. Remove jumper.

If the AC blew cold you either have a bad relay or bad Mag Sensor on the Compressor (or possible a bad AC AMP) or both (like me).

It the AC does not blow cold you got some bad problems with your Compressor or have lost refrigerant.

    Good Luck

Had the blinking light, and my compressor is bad. Need to order one for my mechanic. He said to remove the fuse for the ac just in case. Is this the one that is in the engine bay?

Just pull the MG Clutch Relay under the hood in the fuse box or unplug the connector at the magnetic clutch.

The fuse in the engine bay that is labeled as AC SKT is for the 120 volt outlet in the bed, It is also bolted in place.
The 10 amp AC fuse is for power to the AC Amplifier which controls the servo motors etc...

Confused, so the 10 amp AC fuse won't do what I need? Does the manual show the relay location?
    Thx

No that fuse is for the AC Amplifier circuit.

Here is the relay location under the hood fuse box circled in red:
