I have been doing my research for a dual battery setupf for camping, and now I have questions. I was planning on using a smart isolator and run a parallel charging setup. Then I learned about "smart alternators" I am thinking my plan won't work. What are the downsides of disabling a smart alternators? Could I just tap the charging pin on the trailer plug to charge my second battery? Or can I tap off the bed inverter before the inverter and this will give me enough voltage to charge a second battery? I know the easy answer is just plug a charger into the bed inverter, but is it as simple as that?

On second thought you might want to look into an aftermarket tune that will bump the ecu alternator charge voltage up for agm batteries. A tune might offer the answer you're looking for.

I had simple solar set up on my previous truck. I upgraded to sn access cab and there are no roof rack options that don't involve drilling holes in my roof so the simple idiot in me thinks there has to be a simple and cheap way to put juice into my charge controller from the truck instead of a panel when driving, and when not driving I can set my panel up and use that to feed my charge controller.

What are you trying to power?

I run a single agm battery
    Kd max tune accordingly
Cascadia 4x4 solar panel on the hood

This all allows me to effortlessly run my 45l fridge and even run camp lights for the evening with no issues to crank up and go the next day.

What size battery are you running? I am getting ready to permanently install a Iceco VL45 for work that will be run to my starter battery. I’ll have a Lensun 85w panel to keep stuff topped off for this daily driver.I’m trying to figure out if I need to move to a group 31 (battery tray as well) or if I can run an AGM in stock size.

The short answer is YES, a stock 24 AGM will work, as long as your battery is getting charged from either your alternator or SCC.

My first solar setup was designed around a 20w mppt charge controller, an X2 24F AGM deep cycle primary battery, and a 100w panel. This configuration worked fine with my Dometic CFX-40 fridge, as long as I got a few hours of sun.

Unfortunately, my primary parking space at home is in the shade. If I didn’t drive for a few days, I felt compelled to move my truck to a spot in the sun. That’s why my solar redesign included the addition of an auxiliary 100ah LiFePO4 battery and a DC-DC charger.
