No dipstick for a manual trans. Just drain and fill. I use the Redline MT-90 oil in my 5 speed trans and my Tcase.

I don't remember exactly how many quarts but i filled it until it just started to come out of the fill hole. I had 3 qts but i didn't use all 3. Another thing that you should replace with your manual trans is the shifter bushing. Makes a big difference in the way it shifts. The old bushing wears and will break apart causing hard shifts. Marlin Crawler sells the bushing. It's cheap and easy to replace. I see your also in Md. What part?

You don't have to worry about overfilling it. do it on a level surface and fill until you can feel the liquid by sticking your finger in the fill hole or until it starts to trickle out (which is just messy IMO). its a pretty easy job.

Here's the reason why you should replace the shifter bushing too...

That was supposed to be a rubber bushing but 19 years turned it into a gritty mess of plastic and oil.

I replaced it with a plastic version from Marlin Crawler, but you can get one from Toyota as well.

Esh I'm about to go change mine soon then. Does anyone make a metal bushing? Does that bushing get replaced if you get a short shifter kit?

Just get the heavy duty Delrin (nylon polymer) one from Marlin Crawler. It is a much stronger bushing that will last the life of the truck, unlike the stock rubber/plastic one.

    I'm scared. I don't want to look.

'Bout a year or two ago,,I had a very weird shift/gear select coming home one night. Felt like it went in,,then not quite,,,BANG! tossed it out of gear and rattled the rpm chip,,motor sang out right in front of the cop shop of course.

I'm thinkin maybe that seat split and it gobbled a piece. Has shifted factory fresh ever since day one and still does. Very strange.

New mini manifold next weekend,, and this added to the check list.

Jack the driver side up a bit and add an extra 1/4 quart to the tranny after it starts spilling out on level ground. The trannys come overfilled a little bit from the factory and it will help keep the shifting smooth

They hold 2.3qts. If you are replaceing the bushings, save yourself the trouble and dump 2.5qts in the shifter hole and call it a day. Filling it through the factory fill hole sucks, you have to squirt the fluid in there and contort it around the dirveshaft and it makes the job messy and long. Its quicker and less of a mess to take the center console out and pour it down the shift hole. Same goes for the transfer case if you have a top shift.

Wow I'm officially mind-blasted. There's no risks to doing this? I'm not sure how many f-bombs I dropped last time I was rolling around under my Tacoma with one of this shitty autozone pumps that breaks right before you get it to the proper level, but it was a lot. If this works I would do it every time for my 5sp manual!
