Yeah, that's true. Diff would just spin.
Thanks! The other problem with the twin sticks is finding a manual t case, cutting a hole in your floor, figuring out how to seal it, and then you will need to manually activate your ADD since the t case wont have the electronics anymore, but you still will have 4hi/lo indicator lights on the dash since the sensors are there...

No, not very fuzzy... but you are right - it would work - as long as the eLSD wasn't clamping the brakes on that side trying to make the other side "hook up".

My goal here is when I'm pulling my heavy boat on asphalt in uphill situations with traffic and stoplights and so on - I'd like to be able to access the lo range and be able to make turns without binding. It sounds like leaving the ADD unlinked and telling the computer it's really linked, and making sure there isn't any eLSD shenannigans going on would achieve that. Since this is fairly infrequent I wouldn't expect it to cause harm to anything by just spinning free. Diffs break from this when they suddenly hook up and sheer - not from the spin. THere is zero chance it hooks up with the ADD open. Once I got to a place where uphill starts and turns were not an issue (basically, out of the town) I'd be going backto 2HI and rolling along.

This is all a work-around so I can not destroy my clutch when trailering the boat in the hilly lake towns here in PA and upstate NY and so I don't have to get rid of it for a different truck for just that one scenario where it is really hard to get moving when stopped at a light in traffic facing up a steep grade. THat's it. That is the only thing holding this truck back from being perfect for my needs.

    @bullaculla

If I wanted to spend too much money on this problem... what is the effort involved in swapping in that xfer case you have there with the twin sticks? Will it bolt to a manual trans? What junkyard seach do I need to locate one?

i think that would be so much work and you'd be better off doing the conversion to manual hubs.

Check this vid out - it's based on Tundra components, but it may give you ideas!

I'm not sure if the T case for the manual is different from the auto. You would be better off asking @awsumdc from rock solid toys. You need a transfer case from a FJ cruiser or 4Runner trail.

But if you just want to trick the ADD and 4wd ECU into going into 4lo with ADD open, it would be the cheapest way, just need someone to look at the schematics and probably tap some wires and add a few switches.

I would simply disconnect the ADD and see what happens. Hell I might just go try it now.

Locking Hubs would trigger the same codes Traction Control "brake" grabbing.

    Are you sure about that?
Not bring snark or anything are you sure it would? I'm just thinking it depends where the speed sensor is. If the traction control is measuring wheel spin at the wheel I don't see why it would.

Free wheel hubs won't turn the tone ring.
    Edit:
Shit, maybe it will? Not sure how it works on first gens

If the tone ring isn't turning, the ABS will think the tire isn't spinning.

Shit, maybe it will turn the tone ring. Looking at that thread and his parts...
I don't have tone rings in my hubs anymore, so I really don't know

There is an apparent solution non-twin stick mod out for the 2nd gen, but most likely the 3rd gen added more computers to not enable it. Need an electrical guy to confirm though if its indeed possible/not possible on the 3rd gen. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2wd-lo-mod.195424/

Nice. Thanks for clearing it up. Wasn't sure how it worked. All I know is my manual hubs don't have them

I'd look into something like this: https://www.gearvendors.com/index.html

They sell overdrive/underdrive units that are electronically controlled. This would allow you to switch into/out of underdrive without stopping the truck - a far better solution for the application of towing.
