What I usually do is pick a range of settings I know I need to work with to get the shots I need. For this meet I would say 1/100th & f10. So ill use either shiutter or aperture priority and see what the settings it gives me is at. Lets say I use aperture priority and I set it at f10 and the camera sets me at 1/30th. I know thats too low so I turn up ISO and its forced to turn up shutter speed for me.

I totally get what you mean about your lens though and Im having the same issue right now. I bought a Sigma 30mm 1.4 and I want to take advantage of the wide open aperture because thats what I paid for! But it creates such a shallow DOF that it often messes up my shots so I usually shoot at 2.3 for portraits, 5.6 for groups, or 8-10 for wide scenes. Youll get it though!

Your shots are nice but notice how Jake was dealing with some major shadows which are such a bitch to work with. Your pics are pretty evenly lit and even when there is shadows, the water is able to act as a reflective surface to help light up the shadows via reflection.

Nikons suck. Canon FTW. LOL. jK. Im shooting with a Canon 450D and I only use prime lenses. I have a Sigma 30mm 1.4 which is fucking amazing, and a Canon 85mm 1.8 which is also orgasmic. Im saving up for a Tokina 11-16mm Ultra Wide.

If it's okay with Ryan and Jake I might make a shirt for the lowered trucks

Thanks. I just used "auto" with the kit lens. Didn't want to take the time to mess with settings. Had beers and food waiting. Priorities!

the purple tint is your white balance being off. I just discovered the use of the white card and, Jake, fucking use it. Holy shit it makes a night and day difference on photos. Colors are 100% perfect 100% of the time. Just properly expose and your good.

Take a picture of the white card wherever you plan to shoot pictures. Then when you get home you adjust the white cards balance on your photo editing program. The photo editing program will ask you to click on a neutral grey or pure white point in the picture and you just click the card and the computer automatically perfect all the colors for you. Then you copy and paste that white balance data on all the other pics and :shazaam: perfect colors.
