Transmission Cooler

I've searched the threads but no luck. I want to order a stacked plate trans cooler. I'm familiar with the various brands out there. But the sizing/options is driving me loopy. Can anyone suggest a cooler/size which will fit nicely behind the grill area, easy to mount, without a bunch of cutting and cussing? Thanks.

I just installed a B&M 70268 cooler on my 3rd gen 4runner. I assume it would fit the 1st gen tacoma as well.

 

I have the B&M medium cooler on my 04'. Works well and is plumbed in line (2nd) with the factory cooler getting fluid first.

I'll tell ya that the largest one may not fit as I had very few placement options on the radiator with this medium size. Larger one was thicker I think and stuff got in the way.

You'll have to take off the front grill.
I mounted mine just below the horn. The top of the cooler is at the top of my bumper.
It's slightly blocked by the licence plate and lower plastic on the bumber. But fluid temps coming out are 20 degrees cooler than temps going in. I wanted to mount it low to minimize heat transfer to the radiator.
I didn't want to use zip ties to tie it.
So, it's bolted to the lower support by the bumper.

Best install IMO, these are the instructions I followed. Worked out great and very clean install. Got the L shaped aluminum bracket and spacers from Home Depot.

 

Man, I don't know how you got that to fit behind the bumper. I tried on my 2000, and I couldn't get it to fit. Got my All Pro Baja bumper on and it fit fine with the stock bumper outta the way.

 

Haha it was a struggle. If you take the bumper off it would be easy, but I was able to shimmy it back there without damaging anything. I think I used a thin piece of plastic behind it to keep it from stabbing the AC condenser.

I also flipped one of the AC line mounts (the rusty looking one) to push the tube out further.
