Anybody have any experience with the URD short shift kits? I have a short shift kit in my 964 and would love to have one in my truck. Probably not really needed, but would be cool.

I've got one. Super easy to install, cheaper than the TRD one. With a 500mL bottle of water in the "cans only" cup holder, grabbing 2nd no longer causes the shifter to hit it.
    Totally worth it :burnrubber:

Well, the advantage of short shift is a faster shift. The disadvantage is a stiffer throw that feels notchy. Usually the advantage outweighs the disadvantage in a nice sporty car. But in a big clunky truck that is slow, the notchy stiff shifts suck because you still can't shift fast. The clutch, sloppy drive train, etc. So you are just making a shitty feeling shifter for no benefit.

The long throw of the 5 speed was terrible, and I'm glad I got a URD short shift kit, even if it felt a little stiffer.

Probably overkill. But, it's fun to mod. $110 isn't much of a gamble, so I wouldn't feel to bad if I hated it.

What's the install like? On my Porsche it was a bit of an undertaking, something I'm glad is behind me.

It's not bad. They say 15 minutes, it took me an hour. Getting the console apart is as time consuming as the install itself. You can Google the instructions and pre-read the process beforehand

So you don't have to get under the truck or anything I take it?

    A thing or two...
The install isn't bad. On the 4 cyl, it is a couple bolts and and 4 screws to get the center console out. Then 4 bolts to remove the rubber boot that seals the hole in the cab floor. Then another 4 bolts to remove the shifter. The short shifter itself consists of a spacer plate, shift lever extension and a couple of shims. Take the plastic bushing off the end of the shifter and put on the shims and extension. A couple of allen screws hold it in place. Put the plastic bushing on the end of the extension. Then clean up around where the shifter bolts to the transmission and run a bead of RTV on both sides of the spacer plate and bolt the shifter in place and reassemble.

Haha. I wish mine took an hour to install. Mine took all day when I did it years ago. The shifter lever is a cast piece and some are bigger than most. Mine falls in the bigger category. I spent hours reshaping the shims so I could install the extension. I didn't own a dremel or files back then, so I just had to go after it with sandpaper. :frusty: :frusty: :frusty:

I installed one on my 6sp, really like it. The original throws were absurdly long - I'm always had short throws on my smaller cars though. I'd recommend it for sure.

To be honest bro.... They suck. I ran with them for a good 4 months and u can't shift smoothly with them. And even if u can, it too much of a hassle. Yes they have a better percentage on throw than the TRD, but what good is it if it makes u grind 3rd gear every so often? That's what happened to me. So I went ahead and bought the TRD SHORT THROW SHIFTER and man what a difference. Night and day... Highly recommended it. I fell in love with my 6 speed manual again

I put one in a 2009 six speed and liked it.
    Install wasn't bad.

I think I'll get one. Maybe add an extended shifter too. Kinda cancels eachother out, but is a sweet combo.

Haha, same here. I was weary of taking my dremel to the parts.

I can't believe you did it with sandpaper all the way. lol
