2011 New info on ticking valve train

Not all Tacoma's tick during light acceleration!!

I have read some threads about it but I don't think anyone has nailed down the problem!!
I am extremely aggravated and would pay well for a solution if there was one identified. I already tried isolating the valve on the left (driver) side of the intake manifold.
Why is it that almost all who complain say it's on the left (driver) side !! It is my understanding that not all Tacoma's have the valve train or exhaust tick under the hood starting around 1800 rpm.
I test drove 3 Tacoma's double cab, 4x4, and access cab and NONE of them had the tick. Guys, it's driving me crazy. 2011 truck and it sounds like a old truck with an exhaust leak on the header. It also has a tick at idle and slightly above idle. It did it from day one (which was three weeks ago). I never should have listened to the salesman saying let it break in for 1k miles. Well now I have 800 miles and it has not changed one bit. Maybe louder. Service department says it's NORMAL... NOT!!!
There has to be some tech out there that REALLY knows what the problem is

I'm not sure... Maybe it is and I'm sure most regulars here are tired of hearing about it. I'm not so eager to call it "normal". I don't think the problem is with every gen 2 out there. It begs the question. If not all gen 2 have the tick then W H Y ! ! !

I intend to hammer on this issue for a while and will appreciate any info the technical members may be able to offer.

I suspect it is related to:
1. poor quality control
2. the maint free non-adjustable valve clearance
3. variable valve timing mechanism

What I don't suspect is noisy injectors.
I can hear mine tick under light acceleration at 60 or even 70 mph.
It may be faint but I can hear it.

I even opened my door at 20 mph to get a good ear full and it sounds like an old truck with an exhaust leak!!!
Very agrivating to me.

I have two remedies for ya;
Louder muffler
and CRANK THE RADIO!

Hate to burst your bubble but on #2..... the valves are adjustable on both the 4cyl and the 6cyl. My 4.0 has the tick at times and in 60,000 miles it's never changed. I figure if it was a problem it would get worse or just break...

I dont know how you hear it at 60mph. All I hear at 60mph is wind noise and the tires, and thats all if the radio isn't on.

My Taco has 23000 miles on it and it has done the same thing since day one. I asked the service guys at the dealer and was told the same thing,"it is normal". I have noticed that for a few days after an oil change, the noise is somewhat diminished.

its normal!!! chris4x4 gave the technical information on why toyotas and nissans "tick" on another thread. Its got something to do with the types of valves we have or something.

What it comes down to is we have a noisy ticking engine and our trucks will outlast any ford chevy or dodge!!!

I guess the tick is just on the V6 because I've never heard it on my Toyotas since they have all been 4 cylinder ones since 1977.

I've had 3 toyota trucks and they have all ticked:
A 1993 pickup 4x4 with a 4cyl 22-re
A 2000 tacoma 4x4 with a 4 cyl
Now a 2005 Tacoma with 6cyl..no problems at all

I am pretty sensitive to weird noises and my brothers 07 ticks when I ride with him. His isn't that loud, actually you have to try to hear it when you are in the truck with the windows down and radio off. Once you turn on the radio and go faster that 5mph it goes away.
How loud is yours?

honestly , i would probably be more concerned if your truck DOESN'T tick... those are the problem trucks

As I replied regarding your other post:
Toyota doesnt build alot of sound dampening into their engines, as other manufactures do. Being an aluminum engine, its going to transmit noise quite well. Have your truck looked at. Some ticking sounds have been related to an exhaust leak. Otherwise, it could be the VSV, injectors, valve train, etc. In some trucks, the ticking isnt as pronounced, but they all do it.

The ticking varies depending on engine temps, so that will make it seem like some tick, while others dont., I assure you, all do it. Almost all engines that use a solid lifter system in the valve train (Toyota uses shim under bucket) will have noise. The only enigines that dont have the noise audible, are those made by manufactures that engineer more sound dampening into the engine. This also comes with a cost, passed onto the consumer. BMW, Lexus, Mercedes, etc. have engines that the noise isnt as audible. Once again, tehre is a chance it could be an crack in your exhaust manifold, so have the dealer check it out. Otherwise, its normal. It has no impact on the longevity of the engine.

Timing chain vs belt doesn't help the noise either. I hate timing belts so the noise of the chain is ok by me.

Try getting on the accelerator a couple of times. High revs as long as they are not sustained are good for new engines. Breakes them in better/quicker

My truck also has this annoying "tick" right around 2000 rpm's. It is not the normal "Taco Tick" Sounds like a rod knock!!! Goes away above 2500 rpm's, I am taking it in tomorrow to see what Toyota says??? I have heard the Tick in other trucks, but this is not the "normal tick". I have to say it is truly something toyota will need to fix. We Taco owners don't spend $30,000 to deal with these problems-do we? I am finally getting my acceleration vibs fixed on the 4th of Jan. I just don't think we should be told its normal for our trucks to make bad noises and vibrations. Just my .02
