Are you getting bad MPG?

Consumer Reports list the following info on Taco Gas Mileage:

What model is that?
4x4? 2WD? V6? RC? AC? DC?

13/21 I'm guessing they tested a V6, at least Prerunner and perhaps 4x4 Doublecab.

10 years ago, EPA numbers were not realistic. Today, they are.

 

That's why I sold my 2011 Taco TRD, MPG sucked. Never saw 20mpg on flat South Texas Frwy, Got the same as my 2004 Avalache 4x4, go figure. You have to realize that some of these guys may not be honest with themselves and hoping to get +20 in the future, or most r driving like grandma.

 

My 2.7 got 22 in Texas.
I get 24-26 here in California, and by California standards, I don't drive like grandma.
The Texas/New Mexico 80mph speed limits absolutely kill fuel economy.

Actually if you want my figures to be honest you have to add at least 3% to the mpg. The odometer reads that far below actual distance traveled on my truck. Verified multiple times via GPS and mile markers (all samples recorded between 3.1 and 3.4% more distance than the tripmeter did).

Since my side of michigan doesn't run on freeways (or doesn't have to) the straight odo final tally (not actual) is usually 20-21.x if I drive like Maverick, or 21-22.x if I drive nice. If you do the distance correction a couple tanks are actually about 23.

Can't drive like Grandma did. She'd get 13 mpg in my truck.

Of course if I drove 80 mph across Texas I'd probably average about 16 even if I got the wind behind me.

 

I don't mine buying fuel, but the Taco should get better MPG. And I like my money in my pocket and the station owers pocket. I just think they hosed up the gear ratios some how. And $30 a month equals to 1-1/2 shares of EDE or CNP per month, and they pay dividends also. That's 18 shares in 12 month plus dividends of $.25 per share every 3 months, my man. If I kept the truck five years I would be out 90 shares not counting the dividends of $67.50 in that time. Oh my, I love my money.

He's calculating the difference between 20mpg and 30mpg.

While 30mpg is not impossible in a Tacoma (I pulled 33 in my '94 22RE rolling 55mph down Hwy 95 from Vegas to Phoenix, that truck normally ran 18mpg), the Tacoma is a truck, and 21mpg is good for a V6, 26mpg is good for the 4 cylinder.

If you want 30mpg, you should not be driving a truck.

And there's where the false economy bites you in the ass.

If you have a need for a truck, be it for hauling, working, or towing the boat to the river, then you're stuck.
There are those that would say "park the truck and buy a Corolla for the commute"
So now you're making a 2nd car payment, plus insurance and parking hassles for a 2nd or 3rd vehicle while the truck sits parked.
It's cheaper to continue driving the 13mpg Suburban than it is to buy a 2nd vehicle and park the Suburban.

So what to do?
Let the wife use the Suburban to take the kids to school and do her shopping, buy a Corolla for your commute to work.

Those same people who told you to buy the Corolla for your commute then talk about all of the "soccer moms" driving around in their big SUVs just to get groceries.

Been there... Ford 302 made 185hp/270tq and got 8-9 mpg under my foot. Even at $2.00 at the time that got old. Spend $30 filling the tank, but oh wait! Open the other filler door and put another $30 in. Ugh. It would go anywhere in the winter though.

Yes, the Tacoma should get better mileage. If the VVT and AFR were tuned to allow more NOx I bet everyone here would be 20+.

My 1.5L Honda had a 0.778:1 5th gear that I thought was a pain in the butt, until I got the Tacoma's 0.84:1 6th. At least it doesn't have the 4.26:1 final drive to match.

Toyota needs to step up to the plate... Dodge is rumored to put a 9 speed auto in their next minivan. The taco needs that nice TALL overdrive. Anyone ever ride in one of those newer pentastar vans? 55 mph is about 1300 rpm, maybe. She just lugs right along.

 

Wife's '04 Rav4 has a 2.4 with VVTi and has never done better than 24.

 

Consumer Reports tested a 2012 Base crew cab 4WD, V6, 5-speed automatic.

17 MPG in todays USA world is insaney bad. Since I drove a rented truck in Honduras same as my '11 TRD TACO except OIL BURNER and it got 30MPG up and down hills on dirt roads. If Jeep can build diesel SUV's here so should Toy. I just don't like Jeep. See quote below from Leftlanenews.com.

If this comes out w/ OIL BURNER. I would buy in a drop of a hat!!

Got 15.96 MPG the other day....

 

And you would want to kill yourself in three weeks flat for purchasing the continuation of the worst modern GM product ever assembled.

 

I'm with this guy, i left my 05 Colorado at the Toyota dealership as i drove away in my 12 taco and haven't looked back. I had so many issues with that truck, lots of electrical gremlins the wiring in the Colorado is so cheap. I have owned chevy trucks my whole life and the Colorado caused me to turn my back on GM.

The city I work for used to be pretty much all Chevy except for the police cars.

My work truck is an '05 C7500. Our newest work truck replaced a '97 C3500.
Boss has an '05 or '06 Colorado.

Our newest HD truck? F550
Rest of the fleet? Supervisors are getting Tacomas.
Pool cars are either Prius or Civic... either CNG, Hydrogen, or hybrid.

Fleet services hasn't bought a GM in 3 or 4 years.

 

Modern day El Camino? Mini van with a truck bed? What is it?
