Huh, just saw this thread. I had the same thing happen at the end of January. I have the URD short-throw kit installed. I assume it is because getting into reverse is very tough.

Luckily it was while i was in a friends driveway, and not on the freeway or something.

Wow, that makes me wonder how good URD really is? These shouldn't be breaking at all.

It is really a failure of the stock part, due to a higher amount of leveraging force. The steel is just to weak at that specific point, or it is a flaw in the manufacturing process of this particular area. no idea.

Although I am not sure if URD has really taken the extra leverage into account. it seams thay could modify the coupling point that it applys pressure higher up on the shaft at the same time (giggity). That way it would take the added leverage stress off of the ball to shaft point (so much giggity).

I beleive its the type of metal they use to make the steel shaft . Have seen this many times on domestic cars and trucks and more often with big rigs
Not just the URD shifter but also common on regular daily drivers . The issue may be amplified on the URD given the additional forces placed on the shaft ???

I picked up a new stick this morning $215 OTD ouch. And was back on the road. Man the shift feels sloppy again.

    Here's a little thread revival.

This happened to me last July putting it into reverse to back into a parking spot. It stayed in neutral, so I was able to push it out of the way. I didn't want to drop $200+ on a new shifter, so I just welded the ball on and made it a permanent fixture. The conical clamp exerts excess stress on the stock ball, and thus it shears off. Not a perfect design, but the stock shifter wasn't made to have that extra inch added to it. It can't be said it's a faulty toyota part, but rather a toyota part breaking due to strain above its working tolerances due to the URD add-on.

I have a first gen and my URD SS kit has been on for 6 years nearly 90k miles with no issues.. I guess my shifter is stronger than second gens.

Well, after reading this, I reckon I ought to send back the URD short shifter I just ordered for my 2nd gen last night.... Bummer. I heard so many great things about it but definitely don't want to break my stock shift stick and have to spend 200+ on a new one! And have my Daily driver be out of commission while I wait on the new stick.

I've had the urd kit on my 5 speed for about 18 months and 15,000 miles with no trouble. I like the welding fix though, if mine ever breaks in doing that.

Also the kit is awesome, shifts like a sports car!

Hurst Core Shifter is pretty nice as well. replaces the entire assembly for more mechanical advantage and less stress on this weak spot.

Does Hurst make a kit for the 5 speed? Last I saw it was 6 speed only.

Yes. Just look up 'Core Hurst Shifter Tacoma' on ebay. All the pics are the same, but one is for the 6 speed and one is for the 5 speed. It'll say in the description.

Damn that's awesome! I could've swore when i bought my urd kit there was no Hurst 5 speed shifter available.

Anyone have the Hurst shifter? I wonder what the placement of the handle is like. Also is there significant vibration noticeable due to losing the rubber isolator in the stock handle?

Here is the part number to replace the shifter bushing
Toyota Part no. 33548-60040 . You can also get this bushing from Marlin Crawler and all the guys say its better than the factory bushing Marlin Crawler

So did you bother welding the stock ball back to the stock shifter or just weld all the URD parts together, skipping the ball all together?

Also, what kind of craft is that "shift knob" off of? It looks awesome!
