Tue. Most owners complain to toyota. People forget most people that have issues and also dont have issues are not on the forums. Just car peeps like us.

To those suggesting trying to set up an overnight test drive...would that have made a difference for you? Were any issues immediately so apparent that they would have been discovered over the course of 20 miles or so?

I've had mine just over a week, and 200 miles. It drives like a dream. Maybe it's because I'm moving from a lifted gen1 with MT's which I've had for 15 years, which now feels like I'm driving a skateboard when I get in it.

I don't see any of the issues yet, and while the trans seemed okay to me from the start, I can already see it is adapting and getting better (staying out of ECT mode and driving with a bit of a heavy foot).

I'm not saying I won't experience some of these issues (hope I don't) but I am questioning the value of an extended overnight test drive when nothing seems to be wrong with hundreds of miles on the odometer.

I also recall issues with the gen1 when it was new (hell, don't know if they were ever corrected). Infamous dashboard rattle. Poor / leaking steering racks. Door panel squeeks and rattles. Steering shaft looseness and clunking (the spot weld or roll pin mod). Sway bar connector clunk. Weak and bending rear frames (from towing or bumper mounted spare tire rack). Cab dings from bed hitting cab while off roading.

It wasn't without problems, but has been hands down the most amazing, trouble free and reliable vehicle I've ever owned. I hope this one treats me nearly as well.

Edited to add: Wow, just went back and looked through some of my posts on the old forum when my Gen1 was still young. Man, was I not happy with that truck over the steering shaft and cv joint issue. Bitchin' and complainin' about "how could Toyota put out a truck with such issues" and "if I can't fix this, I'm getting rid of it". I was not alone back then.

As "perfect" as my Gen1 has been over the years, none of them are "perfect". Frustrating at the time, but it will all (hopefully) get worked out and fixes or mods figured out in short order.

LOL. Forgot that I had ever been that pissed at "old reliable". Glad as hell I never got rid of it...

That link was a third gen but it had the 2.7L 4-cylinder which I think all gen Tacoma's had an option for. So not necessarily a third gen problem.

What was the other engine replacement? Curious. I'll search it out.

Well, sometimes you do sound like you are defending the brand more than really listening or providing useful information.

Okay guys, I pulled the trigger. I just purchased a 17 TRD OR Double Cab, with manual trans in quick sand. Has all the goodies, including TRD exhaust, shifter, and the hard bed cover. Comes with the all weather mats, and I had the TRD Pro grill put on. Got an awesome deal from a guy in Columbus Ohio, and a good price on my 09 Element. Drive to get it Saturday.

Enjoy the truck, love my QS Offroad, Pro grill was made for it.

Now quit reading TW, drive the truck and enjoy it for years to come.

Congrats, Manual is the way to go. All the goodies come in handy as l had the heated seats on today for a cold dreary Ohio day.

Thanks, Guys! Pretty excited. I orginally had the deal worked out locally on an Inferno OR auto. I was not sold on color, as QS was what I really wanted. Glad I waited, and searched for the right color. Nothing against inferno, I just love QS. After spending time overseas in Iraq and Kuwait, and riding in Land Cruisers and Defenders, you get attached to muted colors and manual transmissions.

Well guys, I just got back with the new ride! Absolutely love the truck. Drives awesome. I'm not sure where some of these complaints come from. It's quiet, drives great, looks great, good gas mileage on my two hour trip back. Really happy with it!

Get on any forum dedicated to any specific make or model vehicle and all you will hear is bitching. Remember, the internet is where people go now to complain.

I've got a question, why do some of the TRD OR'S come with a chrome grills and some with the black? I'm a big fan of the all black.
