    Intro

My Tacoma is approaching the 50K mileage mark, and like many of you, I enjoy working on my truck and this includes preemptive maintenance. I always wondered if fuel system cleaners were actually effective.

As with many products, discerning any consensus on the efficacy appears elusive; just scan through the 25+ threads already on TW concerning this (see below); and: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fuel-system-cleaner.285056/

One wrote: “Some people say you should use fuel system cleaner every time you refuel your vehicle. Other people say you should use it every time you change your oil, and others still say once a year is good enough. Some people go so far as to say that you shouldn’t use it at all.”

I too tried using Techron before ever oil change during the first 20K, but I had no way to objectively determine if the product was working. I have since religiously used Top Tier gas as my only means for fuel system maintenance.

This thread covers pour in gasoline fuel system cleaners only. Not included: Gasoline antifreeze and stabilizers, octane boosters, diesel specific products, etc.

    General Fuel System Cleaner Discussion

    https://www.cars.com/articles/do-fuel-injectors-need-periodic-cleaning-1420680479051/

“…Many other gasoline additives that are supposed to clean fuel system parts are also available over the counter, and they may help keep things clean enough so that fuel injector cleaning isn't necessary. The additional detergents found in Top Tier gas should do the same thing, which might be all your fuel system needs.”

    https://repairpal.com/do-fuel-system-additives-really-work

“…The truth is, many of claims made by fuel injector cleaners haven’t been scientifically proven, and there’s no way to know if they'll work for you… Recent AAA testing (https://newsroom.aaa.com/2016/07/aaa-not-gasoline-created-equal/ ) , using an independent laboratory showed that non-Top Tier gasolines caused 19 times more engine deposits, after only 4,000 miles, than those that meet the Top Tier standards. AAA recommends that drivers use Top Tier Detergent Gasoline.” The AAA study found only 12 percent of U.S. drivers select a gas station based on whether the gasoline contains an enhanced detergent package.

    http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/engine/impp-1106-fuel-system-cleaners/

A lab testing of one product (not identified)- Conclusion- “ineffective…the problem with pour-in fuel injector cleaners can be two-fold. Effective injector cleaning requires stronger chemicals than can legally be sold in stores for use with emissions-controlled vehicles, and stubborn deposits simply must be dealt with by force—and more of it than an engine’s fuel system can provide, even at 100 percent duty cycle. "Even the injectors we saw today would be passable in most cases, for everyday driving," he admits. "But in high-performance builds, especially in high-strung turbo applications and engines tuned for pump gas, clean fuel injectors are hugely, hugely important."

    https://gobdp.com/blog/fuel-injector-cleaner-work/

“…No matter what grade of gasoline you purchase or where you buy it from it is not going to be perfectly pure…Even if you purchase the highest octane with all the detergents and fancy additives from the best station in town you are still getting a little more than you pay for. These contaminates in gasoline are why almost all vehicles on the road today are still equipped with fuel filters…Based on the average mileage of most Americans per year, and the average fuel mileage of vehicles sold in the US today, you will use over 570 gallons of gasoline this year. That much gasoline can leave a surprising amount of contaminants in your fuel system.”

    http://www.fuelinjectorcleanerhq.com/do-fuel-injector-cleaners-work/

“…The truth is, that most liquid cleaners do indeed contain chemicals that are capable of breaking down various pieces of dirt and deposits that disrupt injector function. Chemicals like polybutene amine (PBA), that are found in cleaners, can help clean: Fuel injectors, Carburetors, Intake valves, Ports…With that said, many companies do release inferior products into the market. Products that either lack the chemicals, or dilute them too much for them to be of any use. In the end, those products do little but empty your wallet. For that reason, it is always smart to purchase premium products from reputable companies…I have collected a few user reviews from Amazon about some of the more popular liquid cleaners in order to show that for the majority of people, the effect of these cleaners are quite noticeable…It’s clear to me from both personal experience, as-well as from the science standpoint and from user reports, that liquid cleaners do work if used properly and with reasonable expectations.

I suggest putting the most stock in the cleaners ability to maintain injector health and cleaning minor clogging issues, and not expecting a fuel additive to clean an engine that has been rusting outside in the rain for two decades. If you keep a cool head and a reasonable mindset, you are definitely going to find value in using fuel injector cleaners. So yes, they do work!”

    https://www.berrymanproducts.com/fuel-system-cleaners-work/

“…Do fuel system cleaners really work, or are they just there to take your money? The short answer is yes, they do. But not all fuel system cleaners are created equal…Gasoline can leave a surprising amount of contaminants in your fuel system… 2 main causes of deposit buildups in engines- carbon & ethanol…When used regularly, fuel system cleaners can help work to remove harmful deposits and keep new ones from forming. They are especially important for engines running on gasoline containing Ethanol and fuel-injected engines.”

    https://www.angieslist.com/articles/do-fuel-additives-really-work.htm

“…But are all fuel additives “worthless?” Not necessarily, according to highly rated mechanics. Dawn Dimarco, owner of highly rated Moon Valley Motor Care in Phoenix supplies an additive to customers, some of whom claim they see fuel savings. “It’s more of a preventative thing,” she says. “And it might save you from fuel injection replacement,” because the additives clean the injector…Mitch Schneider, owner of highly rated Schneider’s Auto Repair in Simi Valley, California, says that additives help very little with fuel economy- however, says he does recommend fuel additives for some cars - especially older ones - because they can reduce carbon buildup. “Aside from cleaning the fuel injection, it can reduce carbon in the [engine] valves,” Schneider says. “It can provide an even burn in the combustion. We’ve seen it make a tremendous improvement on some vehicles.”…Other highly rated mechanics, though, feel they’re unnecessary.”

    http://blog.automotive-technology.com/fuel-injector-cleaners-really-work/

“…When it comes to fuel injector cleaners, there’s definitely some confusion and uncertainty in the market. Talk to any group of car enthusiasts and you’re likely to find yourself in a heated debate on whether these fuel additives actually work or not…It should be immediately noted that there is no published peer reviewed scientific research that specifically relates to fuel injector cleaners or the chemicals that are typically used in them. Much of the information that exists is anecdotal, but that doesn’t necessarily negate the value of that information…Chevron has been adding their Techron formula since 1995- Chevron, despite their huge investment in fuel research, won’t tell us exactly how effective their additive is in testing conditions…The most likely reason for this is that variables for the average consumer are simply too vast, meaning that any released figures would not apply to all Techron customers…While not exactly scientific, we can extrapolate a key point from this information. Injector cleaners will work, but you’ll need the higher concentrations from standalone additives to remove heavier long term deposits from your vehicle….While injector cleaners are effective and can stop new blockages forming, they won’t always be powerful enough for removing heavy deposits.”

    https://tomdwyer.com/2014/uncategorized/the-dirty-truth-about-fuel-injectors/

“…2004-and-newer vehicles are less likely to need fuel injectors cleaning as often; because newer designs and today’s better fuel additives reduce fouling…There are plenty of “cure-in-a-can” fuel system products, but you shouldn’t waste money or risk damage on these potions. The only do-it-yourself fuel system cleaner that works and won’t damage your car is Techron from Chevron. We’re not talking about relying on the low level they put in their fuel at the pumps, we mean dumping a 20oz bottle into the gas tank. For real benefit, Techron must be used at least every 4,000 miles or so.”

    https://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2015/04/should-i-use-fuel-injector-cleaner-.html

“…is this stuff a necessary maintenance item or vehicular snake oil? “That’s a question that I get asked quite frequently,” said Duane C. Richardson, technical service engineer with 3M’s automotive aftermarket division. To concisely answer this query he said, “You’re going to notice some difference, I can almost guarantee it.” This is especially true if you go on a lot of short trips in cold temperatures, driving conditions that can exacerbate the formation of carbon deposits inside an engine, harmful build up that robs your car or truck of performance and fuel economy… he said owners of newer cars and trucks will likely not notice any benefits when using fuel-system cleaner because carbon deposits won’t have had a chance to form in these factory-fresh engines.

Chris Barker, Tech Services Manager at Royal Purple echoed what Richardson noted. He said, “Fuel is chemically less stable than ever before. This is due, in large part, to the use of ethanol as an octane-boosting ingredient.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFZhpqv8lOg

“…The truth of the matter is that fuels injector cleaner removes the gunk from your fuel injectors. Most of the time, dirty fuel injectors are to blame for a loss of power and efficiency from the engine. With that being said, using fuel injector cleaner will likely make your car perform better!”

    https://www.ridemission.com/does-fuel-injector-cleaner-work/

“…Even if you spend top dollar on the highest quality gasoline, it is still going to contain impurities…The truth is, fuel injector cleaner is necessary; however, how often you add it to your vehicle is up to you. A mechanic can advise you about the process.”

    https://wheelzine.com/fuel-injector-cleaner-does-it-work

“…The efficiency of a fuel injector cleaner is mainly dependent upon the particular type of cleaner…If you use good quality fuel and take periodic maintenance activities, then you might not have to clean fuel injectors during the whole lifetime of your car.”

    https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a4848/sponsored-content-fuell-additives-reality-vs-fiction/

“…As a general rule of thumb, when it comes to effectiveness, you get what you pay for... There are three common cleaning agents used in most top selling brands, polyisobutene or PIB, Polyisobutylene amine or PIBA and Polyetheramine or PEA. Most of these are nitrogen based and act as a detergent. If a product lacks a nitrogen based additive, its cleaning ability is negligible…Which detergent and how much of it is in the formula will determine the cleaning power of your fuel additive and the treatment interval. Basically, PIB is good, PIBA is better, and PEA is the best. The ratio of cleaning agents to other fluids in an additive will determine how well it cleans existing deposits and prevents new ones from forming. This ratio can vary considerably by brand and product and is not always reflected in the price. However, if an additive does not contain PEA or one of the other nitrogen-based detergents, it simply is not cleaning…Fuel additives can help with a lot of common fuel system issues, but only if they are used properly and have formulations that will actually do what the label claims. The right product for your situation may not be the same thing you've always used or what the counterman recommends to every guy that walks through the door. If you know what you are paying for and what you are getting out of it, the decision will be pretty simple.”

    https://prudentialtnc.com/fuel-injector-cleaners-really-work/

“…Some have claimed that the effectiveness of injector cleaners is a myth. I have used fuel injector cleaners severally and I can confirm that they are really effective. I have written a review of some injector cleaners in one of my previous posts.”

“…tested Gumout "All in one" fuel system cleaner. I use a mini borescope camera to look into the engine and see how dirty the engine is before the fuel treatment and then after the fuel treatment. I followed the instructions on the container and Gumout fuel cleaner did a great job cleaning the shiny, sludge buildup, but did not work as well as I would have thought on the clumps of hard carbon buildup. It did not clean the cylinders as much as I thought it would since they do say one bottle will clean the engine... Even after two bottles in a row, it did not clean the cylinders as much as I thought it would since they do say one bottle will clean the engine.”

We’re not talking about relying on the low level they put in their fuel at the pumps, we mean dumping a 20oz bottle into the gas tank. For real benefit, Techron must be used at least every 4,000 miles or so.”

    The Evidence

The bulk of the evidence is anecdotal, scientific evidence is hard to come by:

“It should be immediately noted that there is no published peer reviewed scientific research that specifically relates to fuel injector cleaners or the chemicals that are typically used in them…Chevron, despite their huge investment in fuel research, won’t tell us exactly how effective their additive is in testing conditions…Much of the information that exists is anecdotal, but that doesn’t necessarily negate the value of that information.” http://blog.automotive-technology.com/fuel-injector-cleaners-really-work/

Numerous product reviews on the web state no methodology, or are nakedly anecdotal in their methodology:

“…These are among the most popular and highest rated fuel injector cleaners from around the internet.”

“…we’re going to talk about five options which really hit the target with consumers.”

Some reviews sounded a bit more "scientific":

“…spent 46 hours on research, videography, and editing, to review the top choices for this wiki.”

“…spends thousands of hours researching, analyzing, and testing products to recommend the best picks for most consumers.”

    but details were lacking.

One factor not considered in most tests I’ve seen is the fuel history of the engine being tested. Video documentation of a cleaner reducing carbon deposits in the cylinder is fine, but if that engine had been using Top Tier gas exclusively throughout its life, would there be as much carbon to begin with? An AAA study found only 12 percent of U.S. drivers select a gas station based on whether the gasoline contains an enhanced detergent package. Granted, no gasoline is pure, but perhaps exclusive use of Top Tier fuels (combined with an occasional “Italian tune-up”) may be an important strategy in inhibiting injector fouling and carbon buildup.

    Conclusion

The sheer mass of anecdotal information, as well as video documentation of some carbon reduction, provides supportive evidence that some fuel system cleaners can work, at least to some degree- if used properly and with reasonable expectations. Fuel system cleaners which contain high concentrations of Polyetheramine (PEA) may inhibit blockages forming, especially engines running on gasoline containing ethanol and high-performance engines; but these standalone additives are probably not powerful enough to completely remove heavy deposits.

    Finally, these sentiments…

” Can't really tell if it's good or bad, but for some reason, I look forward to putting it in. I guess somewhere in the back of my little mind, I think I'm doing my truck a favor.” https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/lucas-injector-cleaner-work.219014/#post-5065581

“I use it, I have no proof or evidence that it helps, but for 3 bucks and the psychological belief that it’s keeping my injectors clean, I'll keep using it.” https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/lucas-injector-cleaner-work.219014/#post-5075653

Based on stated percentage of PEA, Red Line may be best, but maybe Techron if at 40% - I don't know why there is a stated range in Techron.

We need a chemist to chime in to differentiate between PEA, "Polyolefin alkyl phenol alkyl amine" (Sea foam), and "Stoddard Solvent" (BK 44G)

Honestly, since originally posting this, I've been using a bottle of Techron before each oil change- "...I think I'm doing my truck a favor." :D

Fantastic summary/write-up by OP, not sure why nobody bit in the reply section.

For fuel injector cleaning on-truck, can I use straight, undiluted Berryman B-12 #0101 "Fuel Injection System Cleaner" while running the engine at idle for a couple of minutes in one of those pressurized direct-to-fuel-rail canister setups you buy on Amazon?

This procedure, in the abstract, is certainly Toyota-approved because T. makes a specific pressurized product just for this purpose, as well as publishing a how-to for it:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BaXYb6hENOw

The product is "Genuine Toyota Pressurized Fuel Injector Cleaner" , part #00289-1PF07. (7 oz can for 4 and 6 cyclinder engines.)
    https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Toyota-00289-1PF07-Pressurized-Injector/dp/B00C392ZGS

The instructions on the back of the can are very helpful -- run the engine for about 3 minutes (only,) and don't leave the stuff in the fuel system as it is likely to damage seals and O-rings if it sits in there for very long.

A complete ingredient list isn't shown but it does list "toluene and aliphatic petroleum distillates" so this is no doubt an aggressive cleaning product, probably quite similar to Berryman B-12.

The fact that Toyota blesses this procedure & sells product/equipment for it has given me confidence to go ahead & try it for a 3-minute run.

    Update --

I went ahead and did this procedure, as a preventative / optimization, on my 2014 V6 4.0L, at 74K miles. First time it has ever been done on this vehicle to my knowledge. Truck is on its original set of injectors, none of which have had any known problems to-date.

TL;DR it went fine. Truck ran fine before the procedure, ran fine during it, and runs fine afterward.

This is a high-risk procedure & I would not encourage anyone to do it who isn't both confident & fairly experienced w/ their wrenching skills. Compressed air connected to a quart or so of highly flammable fuel or solvent hanging in a can over the engine bay, miscellaneous fittings & hoses which all must work to provide a leak-free path from the can to the truck's injector fuel-rail supply line, etc. -- what could possibly go wrong? The potential for a sudden, hot fire in the engine bay is quite high.

    Screen Shot 2023-09-02 at 5.29.13 PM.jpg

    Notes:
    ------
    - I had a plan + fire-fighting equipment at the ready in case a connection let go & blasted some or all of the fuel-injector solvent all over the hot, running engine. 2 fire extinguishers (one class ABC general-purpose, and one "Purple K" dry chemical) and a charged, ready-to-spray garden hose at my side in the garage.

    - Pulled the fuel pump relay to avoid having it spew fuel out of the open, disconnected fuel supply line when the truck started up. Also capped this off with a temporary plug just in case.

    - Tested the setup first with plain gasoline, all the way to starting & running the engine for a bit. That way if there was any major leaking or a fitting blew off, it wouldn't be spraying extremely aggressive solvents like toluene, xylene, etc. all over the plastic parts in the engine bay. (Not to mention the paint/finish on the truck.)

    - I set the regulator at about 35 PSI to avoid triggering the fuel-regulator bypass spring, which would've quickly dumped excess fuel pressure into the fuel return line, cutting short my intended procedure.

    - I filled the metal pressure canister about 80% full with Berryman B-12 Fuel Injector Cleaner, part #0101. After pressurizing to 35 PSI & double-checking that no fittings were leaking, I cranked the truck & it started right up. The engine sounded normal as I let it idle for about 3 to 4 minutes.

    - I killed the engine by shutting off the dispensing valve at the bottom of the pressure can. This to help burn off solvent inside the fuel rails & minimize back-drippage when disconnecting the lines. 3-4 minutes at idle consumed maybe 30% of the can's volume. (I.e. dropped from 80% full to 50% full.)

    - After disconnecting the pressure-can setup & dumping the unused solvent back into its original container, I sprayed out the insides of the truck's fuel connectors with lots of plain rubbing alcohol. This to help dilute & flush away excess injector-cleaner/solvent off of the plastic outer parts and plastic inner seals inside these connectors.

    - Then reconnected the fuel lines, inserted the fuel relay, & started/ran the truck normally for a full 10 minutes, including 3-4 minutes at variable medium-high sustained revs (2.5 to 4K,) to ensure that all of the concentrated solvent was flushed out of the engine & also out of the catalytic converters. Truck started right up & ran / sounded normal during this process.

    -------

I'll add to this post and/or this thread if there are any notable follow-up points, good or bad, arising from having done this process.

Is the PEA compound used in the automotive injector cleaners - the same PEA used in the plastics industry? Sold in 55 gallon drums. If so, the pricing of the cleaners is way out of line...........
