This thread is for 1995.5-2004 5 lug tacomas only

Will update as i find more options for 95.5-04 5lug tacomas and threads when more info is found. All first gen 5luggers are welcome to comment with more info if you see something missing, if you have or know of a build thread/write up for any of the info below. Trying to make this as complete as i can for everyone to use.

    For 05-15 5lug info go here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-lifted-lowerd-guide-and-general-info.548413/

    5lug market place: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/5lug-buy-sell-classifieds.547314/

With 3” lift max tire size will be 30x9.5 with minor trimming, anything larger will require more modifications.

With 6” lift recommend tire size is 32x10.5 with trimming max 32x12

With leveling kit it is possible to run 30x9.5 tires with minor trimming but you will still rub alot, would recommend 28x8

Rubbing issues with larger tires have to do with rubbing on the back of the wheel well where the pinch weld is, on the frame during full lock, and top of the wheel well under compression

What is a 5lug, what makes it different then a 6lug

Commonly called 5lug or “mini truck”, A 5lug tacoma is a 2wd model tacoma designed for a more economical market that the bigger 6lug versions weren’t designed to target. They are a lowerd version of a tacoma utilizeing a spring under axel (sua) set up in the rear and up front uses a coil springs and shock. They were designed to have a softer/smoother ride then 6lug tacomas which tend to be more stiff. 6lugs tacomas use a spring over axel (soa) and use struts up front, for this reason 6lug suspension parts WILL NOT FIT on 5 lug tacomas. 5 lug tacomas also have a lower pay load rating and tow rating compared to 6lug tacomas. 5lugs came with either the 2.4 or 3.4 engine while the 6 lug came with either the 2.7 or 3.4 engine.

No problem, ive been looking up part numbers to make this for like 3 days now, and still waiting for doetsch to email me back with there part numbers because its not clear on there website what they make. And surfed all 26 5lug pages and found no real build threads, so ill be searching other tacoma sites soon to hopefully find write ups.

I talked to them last year at the offroad expo n they said they sell about 2 kits a year, they will still make them.

To some companies the 1st gen 5 lug isn't a big market for them so they don't bother stocking anything for us

The front ball joints are unique for 5-lugs. The best quality other than OEM I have found are Moog brand. They are made in Japan, and are stamped with Moog and 555. I think they use an improved OEM design with larger ball joints and slightly larger castings. They also contain grease zerks and all associated hardware.

    Front Left Lower:
    Moog K90260 Ball Joint

    Front Right Lower:
    Moog K90256 Ball Joint

    Front Left Upper:
    Moog K90256 Ball Joint

    Front Right Upper:
    Moog K90257 Ball Joint

The DT lift spindles will easily slice the LBJ boots if you don't put a jack underneath the LCA when removing the upper ball joint. I have had this happen a few times now because it's really easy to forget. I also want to source the part numbers for replacement boots. There are two companies I have found that make them: Febest (rubber) and Energy Suspension (poly). I'll let everyone know if I have any progress.

If you love the peace of mind of having a sway bar, but yet you have too much sway:

Official part numbers for my rear setup:

    Bilstein 33185590 Shock Absorber
    Bilstein 33185606 Shock Absorber
2 of Energy Suspension 9.8108G 3/4" Hourglass Shock Eye Bushing
Explorer Pro Comp 13120 Rear Short Add-a-Leaf Kit
Fabtech FTS200 Soft Ride Add-A-Leaf Kit

This yielded about 4" of lift and increased shock travel to ~8.0-8.5 in

I just went to Autozone to get longer U-bolts. The center pins for the AALs were included in their boxes.

Here's a pic with the Daystar spacer lift on the front and freshly installed rear parts mentioned above.

There was still about 1/2 - 1 inch of rake when I installed the DT spindles, but it looked fine after that.

Searched this kit on Amazon and the end links seem different than the ones on our 5 lugs?

I think there are two different kinds depending on the year model. Those are the ones I have on my 2000. What year model is yours?

Those newer ones look easier to disconnect. What do they connect to?.. mine has a plate on the top of the strut rod where it connects to the lower control arm.

New ones connect same way but use a bj vs being solid so its better movement. You can swap to the newer ones if you wanted

The mounting plate must be different, unless I could bend it 90 degrees.

You can see it unattached here. It's just completely flat, instead.
