Maintenance/Replaced Parts:

 

Update from when I was running a part-time FJ case before the AWD swap.




Tacoma input shaft swapped into the part time VF2A FJ case




The final product. I ran this combo for a few thousand miles without issue. A big upgrade imo over the stock electric shift t-case

Finished up my AWD conversion tonight using a VF4B transfer case from a 6 speed FJ cruiser. So it’s now a 40/60 front/rear split in high unlocked and 50/50 split in high and low range with the center diff locked.

I used driveshafts out of a 4wd automatic Tacoma with the A750F. They bolted right up and fit perfect. Here’s a pic of the RA60F vs the A750F driveshafts. The automatic trans (A750F) driveshafts are the ones on top in their respective locations. Front one is an inch longer and the front section of the rear one is an inch shorter. The carrier bearing is in the same location so that was not an issue. I was going to go with a single piece driveshaft but my truck is regeared and i would need a 4” or larger one which would require modifying the carrier bearing cross member. That made me look for an alternative so i rolled the dice and these worked great

Topped off the shifters with the FJ cruiser TRD shift knobs for the trans and t-case.

Man it went together like it couldve come like this from the factory! No interference between the shifters, just a very minor rub on the console in low. But other than that it was an easy swap. Want to do LBR next?

Got a new set of tires on the truck today. Went with the same 265/65R17 Michelin defenders that were on there previously.


Also ive got about about 750 miles on the AWD swap and it’s been running perfect. Ive done a bunch of mixed driving with it including around town, commuting, highway, wot pulls, and low range stuff and everything functions just as it should. I noticed that there appears to be a speed sensor or something on the back of the FJ case that was unused. Does anyone know if the 6spd tacomas use speed sensors at the wheels to run the speedo? I always thought they got it off the trans or t-case but mine works so it cant get it off the case
Edit: after more research, i found that the later model 6 spd trucks also use the abs sensors for the speed sensors so that's why mine didnt have something to plug into this case
