2nd Gen DIY Maintenance Quick Reference Guide

AWESOME write up. Thank you!!

 

If you (or anyone) wants to do most of the legwork researching guides and finding all the information, I can put it together in a similar format and generate a pdf. This goes for 4Runners, 2.7 tacos, 3rd gen etc.

My only reservation about doing this though, is that I can guarantee all the information for the 2nd gen guide is correct, since I've personally done those maintenance items on my truck.

 

Will some of you confirm the links in the OP to both the online and print PDFs are still operational? Thanks.

I keep this PDF saved on my PC, as well as an Excel sheet of all completed and planned maintenance done to my Taco. Excellent job getting this together! It is invaluable for somewhat novice mechanics like myself.

 

Is there anything like this out there for 1st gens? (Specifically 2.7L 4WD 4 speed automatic (3RZFE Engine)). Thank you in advance! Been looking all over TW and can't find anything this awesome for 1st gens.

Can you please add something like this to the coolant section?
Radiator Cap pressure = 16.5 psi
Useful for pressure testing your coolant system for leaks.
Spec for my 2009 Tacoma 4L V6 manual transmission

Just wanted to say thank you for the write up! This was very convenient when I did all the tranny and differentials fluids when I bought the taco

 

This reference in priceless! Thank you! Posted 6 years ago, but I only just discovered this. I have been building my own parts list since i got my truck last summer. It's mostly Toyota parts numbers, (things like tiny lamps in the switches) the bed slide rail end caps, antenna removal tool, and the rear-camera connector end-caps that you're supposed to put on the harness ends the harness when you remove the tailgate, gas door rubber bumpers, power outlet covers. All of this small stuff was missing or broken on mine when I got it. I scanned your list and the parts numbers I had that are on my list all matched yours. The front/rear/xfer case maint list and info is awesome. Nice! Thank you again.

 

Great write up. Just had a simple question cause I’m about to change my front & rear diff and transfer case oils

the quick guide and manual say different types of oil for these jobs.

Owners manual says to use:
Differential F&R: 75w-85 GL-5
Transfer: SAE

Quick guide says 75w90 for all three. Was this to make things simple?

75w-90 in all three. You can get the real deal direct from Toyota if you want, but its expensive. Most any quality 75w-90 gear oil will carry the GL-5 rating

Parking Brake Cable 2nd Gen.... Manual Transmission
I am gearing up for some major damage on my VERY old original rear brakes...
found 2 great videos for the 2nd Gen parking brake cable.
First diagnosis. The cables have snapped free of the anchor on the rear and cause the brake to lock up (same symptoms I have)

I see that this guide is for 4.0.
Are the procedures more or less the same for a 2.7?
My main concern for the moment is the coolant, this will be my first time flushing my truck and I wanted to do it right.

COOLING SYSTEM AIR BLEED PROCEDURE

Procedures
Type Location Procedure
- - A. Tighten the radiator drain plug
B. Disconnect the 2 vinyl hoses.
C. Slowly fill the system with engine coolant
D. Check the coolant level inside the radiator by squeezing the inlet and outlet radiator hoses hoses several times by hand. If the coolant level goes down, add coolant.
E. Install the radiator cap securely.
F. Slowly pour coolant into the radiator reservoir until it reaches the FULL line.
G. Warm up the engine until the cooling fan operates.
H. Set A/C as follows: Fan speed : Anything except off. Temperature : toward warm. A/C switch :Off
I. Squeeze the inlet and outlet radiator hoses several times by hand while warning up the engine.
J. Stop the engine and wait until the coolant cools down.
K. Remove the radiator cap and check the coolant level inside the radiator.
L. If the coolant level is below the full level, perform the steps from C to K & repeat operation until the coolant level remains at the full level.
M. Check the coolant level inside the radiator reservoir tank again, if low add coolant.

IDK what it means in step B...if you don't have peacock valve then this might be the difference in the 2.7 and 4.0

Otherwise. Seems very similar to 4.0. drain, fill run, and for flush, repeat. I've done it twice on my 2nd gen '15 4.0 no issues and very simple.

I highly recommend a radiator fill funnel. Amazon has them for decent price.
