Writing to this post will make it difficult for the next owner looking for answers

@gearcruncher what do you think about DIY ws ATF fluid swap to something like Amsoil signature series? I've read that there's better performing oils than the Toyota WS.

I've already added a bigger cooler and am probably going to add a magnetic inline filter to the cooler return line in the near future. I also plan to drain and refill my ATF at about 25k. I know that's not a allot of miles but my trucks sees allot of dirt and towing.

Is the procedure of switching fluid brands as simple as draining the old and filling with the new or is there more than meets they eye to this? I.e. I need to take it to a shop to flush with new fluid?

    Thanks!

I would say if your going with the amsoil signature series i would have a flush done instead of a simple drain and fill, so theirs only amsoil atf in there

    I agree
Change it all out if you can . Mixing trans fluid isn't really a good practice
You can do it at home , but you need at least 4 gallons of fluid . By the time you purchase that much Amsoil , you may be better off having a complete flush done at a shop . I suggest making some calls to your local transmission shops for a price . They do have promotional sales as well . Trans shops get their oil at a huge discount and sometimes its cheaper to have the full service performed at a shop rather than the burden of doing the job at home and dealing with 4 gallons of spent fluid and the mess involved trying to replace all the fluid properly .

Thanks for the replies. I try to DIY as much as I can but it looks like this one is going to the shop.
Maybe I'll just do a pan drain/refill every 25k with Toyota world standard. At least keep most of the fluid fresh.

Any idea how much line pressure is coming out of these AC60 transmissions to the trans cooler?

Fluid flow at the cooler is calculated in liters per minute rather than line pressure . If you dig through the manual , there should be a guide showing how many liters per minute the transmission will pump at idle and is based on a new transmission . You could measure the pressure involved but you would have to keep the circuit in closed loop to do this .
If memory serves me correctly , your transmission cooling system should be able to withstand at minimum 120 PSI .

Is this really true? All cylinders or half? I think it would be noticeable when it lit back up. No? I’d be interested to read more on this function if there are some docs on it.

    Hey, Folks.

Great thread as always, @gearcruncher !

I believe that I saw another AT description document other than the one linked above? Does anyone happen to have it? I think that I saw one for the MT also and was not smart enough to download it.

I am mainly looking for info on the TC lockup, esp the goofy slip mode:
There isn't anything about this in the 2016 Service Manual.

    Just curious.

    Thanks!

I've been looking for the same.

I found a chart for a Toyota 8 speed that showed when flex lockup was active during acceleration/deceleration and during which gear change, depending on what gear it was in(S4, D, etc). It looked like it came out of a service manual; but, like you said, it isn't in ours.

I truly believe flex lockup is the bane of these transmissions.

I swear that I saw one on TW, but I can't relocate it. Download all the info, dammit!

Truly. I like locking TCs, but partial lock just cramps my mind.

    Thank you for that link.

Note that some folks playing with vF tune edits have blown out the partial / flex / slip lock function and are just playing with unlocked and locked modes.

    That's just screwy.

I was also trying to find out how the TC modes are accomplished. Nothing jumped out at me in the SM. I know the packs in an AT slip with no problem for the life of the vehicle, but something about a partial TC lock just disturbs me. Most likely unfounded, but . . .

Partial apply of the converter lock up clutch has been around for 2 decades in domestic vehicles as well as on the other side of the pond .
That being said , they do this to save fuel . I really dont care for the way the partial apply functions . Can you picture a guy riding his clutch all day in a manual transmission ? Thats basicly whats going on inside the automatic through computer control .
Guys are getting around this by using OV tune as far as I know

Sorry I havnt updated this post much . Been very busy helping members with the 2nd gen transmissions .
Thanks for any documentation you guys bring to the thread .
I know I could spend a couple weeks just updating the thread

    You're welcome!

That is exactly what disturbs me.

    Reading @splitbolt 's article doesn't help that.

I do know that ATF spec is ultra important though. I had a 90s Dodge and was careful to use the proper stuff. On the good side, I had no AT issues. The bad side was that didn't prevent other quality problems with that PoS!
