The list is fairly thorough but will add more as they arise.

There is also a poll so we can get a feel for how widespread this issue is.

I hope Toyota Corp. stops by in here from time to time to see how bad this issue really is, seeing as "there are no active programs (recalls) at this time for your issue"

Also, thank you OP for consolidating all the threads and making this one, greatly appreciated!

I have an '18 and my paint hasn't had traditional flaking issues but chips easily. Would this be included with the issue? My fear is that this is a precursor to what will ultimately be a flaking issue.

I'm surprised there is no recall for this. I think someone mentioned a class-action lawsuit over this in another thread. It has affected Toyota, Lexus, and Scion models and there seems to be no change or adjustment now that Super White is the most popular plain white color and most problematic color among Toyota, and the manufactures that fall under Toyota Motor Corporation.

Class action lawsuits and recalls are usually for safety issues. I doubt Toyota will do anything. A local dealer may help if they're a good dealer.

This is far less widespread than the original post makes it sound. It doesn't happen with everyone - I wonder if some folks have bad batches or if it's a process issue.

I get my truck plenty dirty and the super white paint on my 2017 has far exceeded my expectations playing in the woods around here (N GA and Tennessee).I have a few scratches, but they're from literally driving through small trees or bushes. My only bad paint spot is from when I hit a trailer hitch that detached from someone's truck, went airborne, and hit my roof and roof rack. I have no chipping or flaking anywhere.

I got my fenders fixed as a goodwill warranty thing but it took awhile. The service manager lied and cock blocked me. Fingers crossed nothing else goes.

Think it's a snowball effect and once it starts it opens the flood gates. I'm sure single coat is more cost effective for them until there is a massive recall and a pissed off customer base. It's not like white is a niche color it's one of the most popular colors for vehicles out there. You would think they would be proactive and just give it a coat of clear like they do for the metallic colors.

Would be curious to see if it happens more with VINs starting with 3(Mexico) or 5(US) production plants.

Course the extra clearcoat adds $$$. Toyota is trying to save money. Since probably 40% of Tacomas built are white the extra cost adds up fast.

I get it and agree, but if it's going to be a massive failure they are just kicking that can down the road and will pay the money on the backend. I get it that if they do it at the factory its a for sure cost vs a maybe cost but massive visual failures like this can tarnish the brand image for the owners as well as the people who see the cars driving around with chunks of paint missing. Maybe a compromise is modifying the mix to increase the percent of clear coat mixed in.

totally agree with you and as stated above, the biggest percentage of Tacoma’s being white that means the majority of Tacoma’s out there have this ticking time bomb of a paint job.

Might be different if it was a brand like BMW where people lease them for 3 years and turn and burn them but Toyota is a brand that many hold onto for a decade plus and the paint should keep up with that ownership lifespan.

Sorry you have a problem but a bit of history....
I have owned several super white Toyotas since 1984 and never had a problem. However, even as far back as then there was a scattered problem. But, there have been problems with Chevy and Ford and Honda white too, not just Toyota.
Some Toyota blues have had this issue. Some Chevy blues too.
Point is, no matter what you learn from your poll, this scattered problem has happened for a long time and multiple manufacturers.
I would not hesitate to buy white again and it is not a ticking time bomb. It just happens to a few. Sorry and hope dealer fixes under goodwill.
I had a Dodge Dakota with paint problems back in mid 90's. My point is, it can happen to any color any manufacturer.

Good feedback. Thankfully (knock on wood) I personally have not experienced a failure yet. I try to stay up on the washing and waxing/ceramic with the hopes that it helps prolong what may be the inevitable. Was just trying to be helpful compiling a resource for people that are experiencing it instead of a new thread starting from zero on a regular basis.

Different methods. Single coat is clear mixed in. The metallic colors have a second clear coat layer on top from my understanding.
